1998 Ford Explore will not move in reverse works great in fwd

what engine?
do you have a 4R70W TRANS OR 5R55E?

What is trans code on label on driver door opening or door?

Do you have manual low? That is pulling shift lever all the way to "L"

You should have dealer run diagnostic self test for fault codes?

Reverse takes much higher pressure to operate.

If you have manual low, it is likely low/reverse clutch that's bad. That means overhaul.

Reverse Clutch Assembly · Seals, piston damaged
· Inspect for damage. Repair as required.
· Check ball missing or damaged
· Friction elements damaged or worn

Taking apart a transmission

Remove & replace the trans is probably about 4 to 5 hours alone.
to overhaul, it's easily 3.5 hours.
Ford publishes Service Labor Time Standards and other companies do inflate them some for their manuals because Ford techs only work on Fords and know all the ins and outs to repair them. Outside garages work on all models and never get that familiar with just one model. They do charge less/hour than a dealership so it kind of washes out.
