Have the alternator tested. You are providing a low charge to the battery when you jump it and when taking it above 2K RPM requires more amperage resulting in the engine dying and the rough idle

Your right to think about gas but the fuel pumps fail all kinds of crazy ways. The easy way to cheack to see if its the pump is to listen to the tank ( with your ear right against it ) and turn the key on to here the pump come on. If you don't hear anything and the hearing it'self is OK then with someone trying to start the car bang on the tank to shake it and see if the pump will come back on (sometimes they quit altogether and this won't work) The vehical may start right up. If it does the pump is still bad even thogh its running and may not restart as early as the next ry or even quit while running as it already did to you. Rember evven though the gauge says theres gas there may not be be as someone could have stole it and the gauge got bent during the theif. Do'nt look in with a lit match just cause you saw it on TV. Shake the car with a funnell in the fuel cap and listen for gas slushing around. Nothing or slight your out. Listen for the pump this way as it'll really hum in the funnell even full of gas

SOURCE: the car wont charge .
same as mine ,4.0lt mine but its for sundays only cannot afford the petrol ,anyway check the wires on the alternator ,one big one and a smaller one ,now start engine and take neg battery terminal off if it stops then alternator isnt charging ,if so fit a genuine bosch factory exchange unit .but first make sure you have power in the thick cable from the battery though ,sometimes they get a dirty connection in the power distribution box ,if in doubt connect a wire from the jump start point on the firewall to the terminal on the alternator
