Turn your crank pulley and line the timing marks to top dead center, pull the distribuor cap and see where the rotor points to, thats where the #1 position is located.

#1 plug on the distributer

Put number one cylinder on compression top dead center, then look where the rotor on the distributor is put a chalk mark on the distributor housing, then install cap. Where mark and cap lign up to distributor cap terminal tower that is number one. Make sure you follow firing order and which direction distributor turns and put on the rest of wires. (example firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 is on a six cyl.)

Why is my 1992 ford festiva firing in the order 1-2-3-4 and not 1-3-4-2?

Your order is wrong, and you need to switch the wires around on the top of the distributor. First pull the distributor cap off to find direction of rotation (some distributors turn clockwise, and some turn counterclockwise). Watch the rotor, the black bar on top of distributor shaft, and note it's direction of travel while someone bumps the starter over with the ignition switch. Now you can put the dist. cap back on, and arrange the spark plug wires in order 1-3-4-2. Leave number 1 in place, if it is marked as 1 on the cap. The plug wires can be pulled out of the raised terminals in the distributor cap for setting them in order. Just be careful of pulling too ******* the wires, you can cause them to break internally. Twist them back and forth first to loosen them, and gently pull them out, using the plug wire's rubber boot if possible to pull on them.
If it is easier to pull the sparkplug wires off the spark plug, rather than the distributor cap, you could set the order that way. Just need to know the direction of rotor travel. Number1 will go to cylinder 1, and next in order will be number 3, following direction of rotation, so that wire goes to cylinder 3, and on to 4, then 2.
Post back if you need more help. Good luck.

Need to know how the plugs go back on the distributor cap for 1988 v6 chevy pick up, what is the firing order?

Hi my name is David =d_hubbs . Your Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Clock wise Rotation. NOTE make sure you know where your #1 Wire starts at on the Distributor Cap. To know for sure Reove your Coil Wire so it won't Start --Remove #1 Spark Plug which is on the Drivers side Front Plug. Have someone Bump the Engine a Little at a Time Until You Either see pressure Rise on a Gauge or Just Put your Finger on The outside of the #1 Spark Hole ---When you feel AIR ==Compression out of that Cylinder. .Your at TDC on Compression Stroke. Just Remove Distributor Cap.Look a Rotors Position in your Cap Which ever Spark Plug Hole in your Dist,. Cap is Closet to is where you Start your #1 Plug Wire. Its Possible you went Slightly Past Number 1 ,If so Just move ALL plug Wires 1 Hole Back Counter Clock Wise. And you Should be Good To Go. Please Let me Know how my solution helped you by Voting For me and Leaving a Testamony. Thanks From:---d_hubbs

I have an 89 Ford Aerostar that I need to know where the #1 wire goes on the distributor cap

there is 2 ways you can do that...1... is there should be a #1 stamped into the cap but not always so in that case... 2... turn the engine over by hand and line up the timing marks on the harmonic balancer (A straight line cut into it on the outside diameter) with the mark on the timing gear cover to TDC,OR 0 degrees, pull off the cap and look to see where the rotor is pointing on the distributor.MARK that location on the intake manifold or wherever it points to as a reference point.Usually the rotor at this point will point towards the rear of the engine, start #1 there and follow the firing order,if it backfires or does not want to start then double check the direction you are going with the firing order and double check the order and if it still backfires or does not want to run then try opposite direction or 180 degrees on the cap and start #1 there and follow the firing order the direction the rotor turns while cranking. The reason why it could be 180 degrees off is because when the timing marks are lined up,the intake valve could be open or the both valves are shut. The correct way is to pull off a valve cover and see if both rocker arms are floating,in other words that both valves would be shut--Thats when you know #1 cylinder is all the way up and the rotor will point that direction on the cap,but im trying to save you tons of work by leaving the valve cover alone.

Removed my spark plug wires and changed them out out on my 91' ford f-150 but forgot how they go back and dont have a diagram

if the distributor hasnt been modified, then find # 1 on the distributor cap and plug wires in this order:18456273 and #1 cylinder starts on the passenger side in the front and the order on the cylinders is 1234 on the passengers side starting from the front of the engine and 5678 on the drivers side starting from the front of the engine,if the distributor has been taken out and turned at 1 time then put the crank on 0 degrees and pull off the distributor cap and locate where the rotor points,if it faces towards the rear of the engine then go ahead and follow the firing order i provided,if it faces towards the front of the engine then the crank is off 180 degrees so you would want to start the #1 plug wire exactly the opposite side of the distributor, then go clockwise with the firing order.

What is the firing order for the 1994 ford taurus 3.8 engine, have just replaced cap and rotor, need order, thought I marked them but engine will not start. Perhaps I was wrong in the order.

Not trying to insult your intelligence, I'm going to get pretty basic here,

Looking at the Front of the engine, the spark plug order is 1, 2, 3, and 4. Front to back.

Looking at the distributor, it has two mounting screws for the distributor cap. One is close to the engine, the other screw is on the other side.

Looking at the distributor cap screw, on the Far side away from the engine, Number 1 spark plug is on the tower to the Left of it.

To the right of this distributor cap screw, is Number 2 spark plug tower.
The rotor turns clockwise.

Again, looking at the distributor from a top view, there is a distributor cap screw at the top, (Close to engine), and a distributor cap screw at the bottom.

Drawing an imaginary line from the top screw to the bottom screw, Number 1 spark plug wire goes to the Left, of the bottom mounting screw.

Firing Order is 1-3-4-2
The rotor turns Clockwise, (To the right)
