You can unplug the harness at the tank and see if the gauge circuit is shorted to ground between there and the dash.

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

most of the time this is simply just the float in the gas tank getting stuck had the same problem in my car. unfortunately you have to access the gas tank to fix, but it is an easy fix. hope this helps any questions let me know.

Check the ground wire at the wiring harness at the fuel tank. If it has a good connection then check the power wires to the tank. You may have a bad pigtail going to the tank. A replacement harness is available at NAPA.

Common problem on the 03-06 Silverado instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. QUICK CHECK USE BOOSTER CABLE ONE END ON TANK OTHER END ON BATTERY NEGATIVE IF GAGE GOES OK MAKE UP SHORT WIRE FROM FRAME TO TANK SEEM LIP
AND ATTACH MAKE SURE METAL IS CLEAN
