Where is the neutral safety switch at on 2005 buick rendevous

Inside the transmission . An it's called internal mode switch .

The lever assembly-manual shaft detent with internal mode switch (IMS) is a sliding contact electrical switch assembly that corresponds to the PRNDL position selected. Each of the PRNDL positions has a unique ground pattern on four wires from the control module.
The assembly consists of two major components:
• The internal mode switch that consists of:
- The housing (1), which makes up the stationary contacts.
- The insulator (2), which makes up the moving contacts and is secured on the detent lever (4).
• The lever assembly which consists of:
- The manual shaft (3)
- The detent lever (4)
The range detection is accomplished by securing the moving contacts to the detent lever. When the driver selects a PRNDL position, the detent lever inside the transmission rotates. This rotates the insulator which in turn grounds the four wires in a unique pattern for each gear selection, corresponding to the PRNDL position selected. The IMS is electrically connected by five wires (four of which the control module supplies voltage to and one wire that is a common ground) to the transmission pass through connector.

What is a detent on a shifter

A detent is a notch or notches in a part used to keep a shifter (in this case) at a certain position. Be that an automatic or stick-shift. You can imply that the shift pattern on a stick-shift has detents for each gear as the shift lever locks and slides in and out of each position for that gear to work when the clutch is released. The detents on an automatic can resemble "steps" which engage a different gear or series of gears(drive) when a certain step is locked into position by a pressure bar or pressure lever.

Sometimes the pressure bar or pressure lever is spring loaded and your hand works against that tension to select a gear or function(drive). There may be an adjustment for the spring tension, or the spring is too weak and the shift assembly must be replaced.

With electronic shift solenoids, some of the shift assembly is different than with the old-style mechanical shifter. The action may be fly by wire with electronic shifts.

I do not know what you have, so there may be differences.

My nissan pulsar 1997 wont come out of park the shifter moves but the car wont change to from park to drive/reverse

Do you feel detent positions as you move the shifter? If it gives little resistance or lacks detents, your shift linkage has come undone (simple fix).
If you feel detent positions but the transmission does not engage, your transmission has failed. Check the fluid... you'll know.

Volvo xc90 headrest removal

You have to feel from the back of the seat push trough the leather and feel for the detents. You can do one side at a time. Put your hand under the head rest and apply pressure upwards as you push in the detent with the other hand. Its no fun. one you get past both detents it just slides up.

I installed many tv systems when i was a volvo tech.

Fog lights

A detent is a "stop". The manual is telling you to pull out the switch until it stops. The rear fog lamp on my VW Polo works the same way. It may help you to know that on my VW (1) although the headlamps will come on without the engine on, the fog lamp requires the engine to be running, (2) the headlamp switch must be in the "on" position before you can pull it out to the detent position.
