Question about 1993 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

Car This is a 4.6 ltr and the trans was rebuilt 5 yrs ago. Replaced the O2 sensors and cleaned the Mass airflow sensor thinking it was that but wasn't. Car jerks whether it is cold or hot but more so when cold and at lower speeds, Check engine light comes on periodically but never stays on long enough to get a computer on it. A friend suggested Lubeguard for the trans. It helped for the first 24 hours, but then went back to doing it and seems to actually have gotten worse.

SOURCE: check engine light on.code is po113.sensor 1 circuit high input

If the only code you have is a P0113 then the answer to your question is no it can not be the oxygen sensor. P0113 indicates that the IAT sensor is reading at -46 deg F. With the computer thinking it is that cold it will need lots of fuel, cold air is more dense and com-pack so more molecules of oxygen and therefore needs more fuel to keep correct air/fuel ratio.
Do you have a way to measure voltage across the sensor?
You should have about 5V coming into the sensor and around 1.5 to 3.0V(depending on the temp) leaving it.

SOURCE: 2002 lincoln ls camshaft sensor..

The cam sensor and the cranksensor work together to keep the engine in time,so the cam sensor can`t be ruled out.But check the knock sensor,or better yet replace it,knock sensors sometimes will not set a code.If they are not working,or not pluged up,they will give those symptoms.

Very common problem is about a dime size hole wearing in the rubber elbow on the PCV valve located on the driver side rear of the intake manifold.

My jeep is acting like it's choking and sputtering.

O2 sensors will not cause this symptom. Have the fuel pressure tested with a special test gauge and also clean the inside of the Mass Airflow sensor with the special spray they make and change out the air filter to the engine if it is dirty.

Anytime you make a change to any part of the emissions system, its best to disconnect the
battery for a few minutes. If you don't, the computer retains the fault code and it will usually keep
coming back. When all power is lost to the computer, it will do a complete scan when reconnected
and engine started. Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then reconnect and see what happens.

    P0100 OBD-II Trouble Code

    Technical Description

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Malfunction

Basically this means that there's a problem with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit.

You will likely not notice any serious driving problems, but there may be symptoms like a general decrease in power or sluggishness.

A code P0100 may mean one or more of the following:

    * The MAF may be disconnected, or a wiring connection may be bad.
    * The MAF sensor may be faulty.

    Possible Solutions

Use an OBD II Reader (or go tou your local parts store and they will for free) and reset the code and see if it comes back.
Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures:

    * Check the Mass Air Flow Sensor wiring/harness is connected properly and that there are no broken / frayed wires.
    * Unplug and reconnect the MAF wiring harness a few times to clear the contacts.
    * Check the voltage of the MAF sensor (refer to a repair manual for vehicle specific information).
    * Replace the MAF sensor.

The mass airflow can get dirty and you will get trouble codes for everything under the hood except for the mass airflow. Try unplugging your mass airflow and driving the vehicle, if your problem goes away you need to clean the sensor. Buy some mass airflow cleaner though because other cleaners can damage the coating on the sensor.

    Car keeps stopping

Sounds like you have a bad O2 sensor - typically what happens is the sensor will go into closed loop and stay there and once it cools down will open up and be able to start again - your car has two O2 sensors, it is best to replace them both - bet you notice your car getting crappy fuel mileage too. hopefully this helps you, as this is the most common problem - Also, clean your Mass Airflow Sensor, this is really easy to do and may help as well and should be the first thing you do before throwing a couple hundred dollars into new O2 sensors, use CRC mass airflow sensor cleaner available at auto zone or advance auto for about $10.00 a can, if you are not familiar with where it is located ask the guys at the auto parts store to show you - it takes like 15 minutes to do and requires only a t-20 torx bit - this part needs to be cleaned every 6000 miles.
