Engine light indicator on

When you turn the key on (just on ,not start ) the check engine light doesn't come on ? Does the car start an run ? Maybe the bulb is burnt out , seen that a few times .
Have the vehicle checked for code's
DTC P0650 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit
Circuit Description
There should always be a steady malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the ignition switch is on and the engine is not running. The ignition voltage is supplied within the instrument cluster to the indicator bulb. The engine control module (ECM) controls the lamp by grounding the control circuit via an internal solid state device called a driver. (transistor)

Do all the gauges an other instrument cluster lights work ?

Is the SECURITY light lit on the insturment cluster ? Does the engine spin with key in start position ?

Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) System Check

Attempt to start the vehicle.
NO - The engine cranks and starts.
Refer to Engine Cranks but Does Not Run in Engine Controls.

Note the security indicator while attempting to start the vehicle.
The indicator light is ON and OFF after approximately 5 seconds.
• SECURITY Indicator Always On or Flashing, Engine Does Not Crank
• SECURITY Indicator Always On or Flashing, Engine Starts

Engine Cranks But Does Not Run !

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ALWAYS ON: CHECK MIL CIRCUIT FOR SHORTS TO GROUND IN wiring HARNESS .

Note: If vehicle will not start, GO to A1 .

• If any Key On Engine Off or Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes are present, repair before proceeding.
• Disconnect PCM.
• Measure resistance between PCM harness connector Pin 2 and PCM harness connector Pin 51 or 103.

Is resistance less than 5.0 ohms? Yes No REPAIR short circuit. REPLACE PCM (refer to Section 2, Flash Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) ).

• An indicator is inoperative/always on - SERVICE ENGINE SOON

• Circuitry.
• Bulb.
• Instrument cluster.
• PCM.

• GO to Pinpoint Test P .

This is one you need to take to a repair shop , need to hook up scan tool to see if you can turn off an on check engine light , could have a wiring problem , cluster or engine computer problem !

The CHECK engine light means Malfunction Indication Lamp (MIL). It is a yellow colored indicator which always keep the driver of the car informed about the performance of the engine sensors and the Electronic Control Module (ECM). It is always in the OFF state when the engine is running. If it becomes on while the engine is running it become necessary to get the car be checked and scanned for any one or more problems which have occurred in the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system.

There is a diagnostic procedure in the factory service repair manual for engine light lit ,no codes . Did you take it to ford dealer ? MIL - is referring to check engine , service engine soon etc...

• MIL always on when engine is running (no DTCs):
• MIL circuits

• For Focus, Mustang, Town Car, Continental, LS6/LS8, Escape, Windstar, F-150, Expedition and Navigator/Blackwood:
• Instrument Cluster, Section 413-01 of the Workshop Manual.
• All Others:
• GO to NB1

SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator After the engine is started, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator will prove out for a duration of three seconds. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within five seconds, the instrument cluster will illuminate the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

• An indicator is inoperative/always on - SERVICE ENGINE SOON

• Circuitry.
• Bulb.
• Instrument cluster.
• PCM.

• GO to Pinpoint Test P .

PINPOINT TEST P: AN INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE/ALWAYS ON - SERVICE ENGINE SOON CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS P1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SERVICE ENGINE SOON INDICATOR ACTIVE COMMAND Trigger the HEC active command MIL.

• Did the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator illuminate?

Yes REFER to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.

No INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

you mean check engine little it o2 sensor have any codes

Always on,why is that?

Those thype of lights have been on all vehicles
for over 30 years as required by the govt in north
america at least,so how is it your not checking for codes
almost the same day you get a light on your dash

That is a MIL Lamp or Check Lamp indicating your car
has a possible faiure in one of it's many systems

You check for codes right away & diagnose,resolve or
repair within a week inless it isn't something that would
ruin your engine or trans etc.

The wording service soon is misleeding & nothing to
do with you getting some type of service at your convenience,
it is a serious problem untill you check for codes & at least
have some indication of the system effected

have it checked out by a quality trans shop amco's always a good chpice good flashing light indicates transmission malfunction or engine problem and the trans has gone in to safe mode but if no check engine or service engine light prob the trans

generally indicates the computer is sensing something out of sorts with the system of the car. Take to a dealer, mechanic, or autozone to have computer scanned to diagnose the cause of the light coming on.
