a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Mechanic (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

first be sure that its the engine light and not the "service" light. the service light will usually illuminate if its time for an oil change. if its the service light ur owners manual should tell u how to reset it. if its ur engine light then try disconnecting ur positive battery cable for 1 minute. that should reset ur ecm and get rid of the engine light. if the engine light comes back on then have a diagnostic scan done to determine whats causing it. This car does not have a auto trans dipstick, the level can only be checked by the dealer, this is a growing trend that started with most German cars, the filter is inside the trans pan and only needs changing every 60,000 miles.

Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx 2004-06; 2006 HHR, Cobalt, Pontiac G6, Solstice
Turn ignition to run engine off. Display OIL LIFE RESET in the Driver Information Center (DIC). Press and hold the ENTER button for at least one second. An ACKNOWLEDGED’ display message will appear for three second or until the next button is pressed. This will tell you the system has been reset. Turn the key to OFF. If the “CHANGE ENGINE OIL” message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

SOURCE: Transmission fluid
You can change the fluid by removing the pan and replacing the fluid with the correct exact amount through a fill cap on the top of the trans. The pcm will display a maintenance required light on the dash if the fluid level is low.
That's all there is to it.
