Question about 2002 Chevrolet Impala
How can I test the valves to see if oil is leaking through?
Check spark plugs if electrode full of oil more likely valve seals and valve guides worn.if you see white smoke new head gasket leaking do a compression test see what cylinder pressure you have.you need at least 140 to 175 compression.

It sounds to me like you have a head gasket leaking. See if you can get a gauge and check each cylinder. Are you using alot of anti freeze?

Take that truck into the dealer and have them repair it under the powertrain warranty. 2007 offered a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty.
The smoke on startup is the result of oil getting past the valves.

If you have steady thick white smoke and it smells like anti freeze it is most likely the head gasket. The head gasket can fail in different areas. If it has white smoke it failed between a coolant passage and the combustion chamber. If the oil is milky it failed between the coolant passage and an oil passage. Just because the oil isn't milky doesn't necessarily mean that the head gasket it's blown.

when run with a misfire, the cat will get loaded up with fuel, it takes awhile for it to burn out, and a code may set, on some occasions it ruins the converter, try clearing it and running it
