Question about Dodge Intrepid

Car dies while running

My car was running perfectly. The light turned green at a stoplight. I pushed the gas and my 1996 dodge intrepid died. Lights were still on but the engine died. It will turn over but won't start. I sprayed starter fluid into the injectors and still no fire. I changed the camshaft and crankshaft sensors and still nothing. The timing belt is intact. Any ideas what it could be?

I pulled the spark plug and it only fired once in about a 4 second turnover. Could it be the ignition coil?

Yes it could be. I would check the rest of the plugs. You could get a used coil assembly to check it.

You say the timing belt is intact, so I assume you have checked compression.
Have you checked base fuel pressure and are you getting spark to the plugs ?

SOURCE: 1999 Dodge Intrepid Dies while driving and sometimes won't start

I could very well be the TPS throttle position sensor acting up. I had a very similar situation on a 99 Concorde with the same engine in it in my shop today. Go to a shop that is able to do a data stream on the engine. What it is, is they hook up a scanner and have the ability to watch all the sensors as the car starts/runs.

turn the key to the on position a see if you can here a buzzing sound around the fuel tank,if you don't hear a sound then. (be very careful while doing this) with the key off take a fuel line coming from the tank loose, make sure its pointed away from you and turn the key to the on position, see if any gas comes out,if not then your fuel pump is probably bad.

SOURCE: My 96 Chrysler Concorde turns but won't start. It

I had this same issue in my older bmw, it drove me crazy! not sure about your second question, but I replaced a CPS (crank/camshaft position sensor) and the TPS (throttle position sensor) all around 50 bucks each, and it started up fine and runs!

Hope this helps!

well you narrowed it down to a fuel problem. not sure about your model, but most cars have a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail to reduce un needed pressures. that could possibly be bad. its cylinder in shape and has a vacuum hose connected to it. check the hose and that unit.

Car died in parking lot, replace battery, still no start...when I turn key, car wont start and the power on radio(the clock) also dies...like losing power somehow....

It's possible that the starter is bad but don't think it would cause the car to die or just stop running. You say in a parking lot, did you shut it off and then tried starting it? and no start? if so check the starter !!!

It sounds like there is a fusible link blown under the hood. The link vary in location on chrysler vehicles but they should be near the computer.

How do you repair a throttle positioning censor

Reach in under the dash, under the steering wheel and pull the cable end off the gas peddle. Open the hood, disconnect the cable end off the throttle body, then haul the cable through the firewall from the engine side. Replace by doing the reverse.
