There is a gasket on the mating faces, this would appear to have failed. get it replaced before your fluid is gone. It could be a failed transfer box, but I can't be sure from your description. Get it looked at by a professional.

Transfer case leaking


The transfer case is independently sealed and does not share the same fluid that is inside the transmission. It can only leak from the breather (if the fluid is in failure or was over filled), from the front or rear seal, or from the case (either the case is cracked or where the case bolts together, the sealant has failed). What causes transmission fluid to leak out. while it is seating.


where is it leaking front seal ****** pan or dipstick tube the driveline seal or (rear output seal ) or pump gasket any of those places can leak. when it cools down the seals are probably shrinking and alowing fluid to pass

Leak coming from transfer case. It leaks right were the rear drive live goes into the transfer case. Replaced the seal once. Was leak free for about a week, and now it is worse than before. Possible...


the trans case is not under a pressure, the fluid is a free flow oiler that gets slung around by chain and gears. are you sure it was the right seal ? DIdnt damage it on install !!? did you over fill the case ? Check rear spline on case and make sure it is not sloppy movement back and forth, up and down. if it is then seal is getting pushed all over and oil seaps past. but you would have a vibration while driving that you would notice. is ther a groove on rear slip yoke that is riding on seal groove. after reading your question again, are you talking about the drive shaft going into the transfercase or the main trans/ transfercase mating area? What is a rear drive live? rear driveline!! as in driveshaft?

your output seal on the tranny or input seal on your transfer case is bad. you have to pull your transfer case to tell. this is a pretty straight forward job. block wheels. put transfer case in neutral. drop front and rear drive lines.diconnect transfer case shift linkage. there is a short commponent connecting the trans to the transfer case. the bolt on either end face each other. remove the bolts to the transmission. the transfer case is heavier than it looks, i suggest getting help. pull back on the transfer case until it will drop down. it will pull out a bit because of the trans output shaft. replace what will probibly turn out to be the tranny output shaft seal and reassemble in reverse order.

Steering problem


I'm not sure, but it sounds like your front axle is still engaged. You will experience this on asphalt or concrete that is dry. If you pull on to a dirt road and the problem is not as pronounced then that is a tell tail sign the front axle is still engaged. Block the rear wheels. Jack the front end up and see if the driveline will turn. If it turns freely then you have a different problem If the driveline can't be turned then the transfer case has not disengaged for some reason. Sometimes the transfer cases get wrapped up as they call it. Back the vehicle up while shifting from 4 HI to 2 HI. This may disengage the transfer case and allow it to return to 2 wheel drive.

Want to convert 93 grand cherokee from 4x4 to 4x2 .. what's neede


take the tansfer case out take the driveline off the front and get a new driveline going to the rear because without transfer case you rear driveline wont be long enough to reach the rear diff, about 8 hours work and $600.00 ruff est, that is only if the transmission is still good

Transer Case; 2003 Silverado, Z71/4x4 (NP246)


Check to see if you have a pin hole leak on the passenger side of the transfer case, it will be blue in color, it is caused by a PUMP RUB issue that Chevrolet refuses to acknowledge. It will be located the 5th. bolt up from the bottom, you may be very low on fluid. For an easy fix, clean and grind slightly and place JB weld at the hole. Let me know if this is the problem. I used this technique on my 2003 avalanche and it has held for 8000 miles with no reacurrence.
