Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

VW Golf CL (1997) 1.6 makes chugging noise when driving. Just recently started, the sound gets faster as the car gets faster. I've seen similar posts about a "ticking" noise, but this is more like a steam train chugging. Any suggestions?

Have the tyres professionally checked for tread/ belt separation as this will make a noise as the moved belt hits the road.

Thank you for your help but just to add, the noise is definitely coming from the engine.

So it is coming from the engine. Chugging sound. Look for loose spark plugs. Gas from under seat of the plug . Check for loose exhaust manifold or blown exhaust manifold gasket. Check that the flex part of the exhaust pipe near manifold is not cracked. Check drive belts for condition and tension One last thinh check that the plastic splash panel under the front is not breaking off and flapping under the engine in the wind as you drive along.

SOURCE: VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.

This could be almost anything from loose trim to broken body parts, you should get the car checked by bodyshop to make sure that it is safe to drive

My 2001 VW Golf will not turn over when it is started or it will chug a couple of times and then stop. It seems to be more tempermental when the weather is rainy and/or damp. FYI...it has 102000 miles on...

It is tough to tell without looking at the engine, but I would recommend checking your spark plugs. If you hear a chugging, at least you know that your fuel pump is working. The gas sounds like it is not being ignited properly. Hope this helps!

Hi i hit my mark 3 vw golf into a ditch and now the left hand side wheel is bent and possibly the ball joint or drive shaft. Will i be able to use parts from a vw polo of similar age. Will the vw polo...

Simple answer: No. Polos and Golfs use different mechanical components.

More complicated answer: If there is that much damage then the bodyshell mountings are also quite likely to be distorted which will make any repair attempt futile. Ideally you must get the damaged parts stripped off and then get the mounting points accurately measured. This can only be done using specialised measuring equipment. The alternative is to invest in the parts needed for your repair and to fit them with an immediate alignment check at the nearest suitably equipped garage. If the alignment of the body is off then the car is effectively a write off as repairs will exceed the car value.

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)
