Changed the head gasket on a 1988 ford mercury cougar v6 got it all back together and the timing is off, I set the timing with a light, the firing order is correct, I have spark with all my sparkplugs

the firing order 1,4,2,5,3,6.......the coil should be marked. the rear is 4,6,5 and the front is 3,2,1 looking at it from the front, counting from left to right.

If your talking about the firing order? I didn't know if you had distributor or coil pack, so here is both. I don't like using a picture to show number 1 spark plug tower, that can be misleading, with a distributor. The firing order is 142536.

This could be caused by a faulty head gasket.
This is a semi-major engine fix, If you cannot DIY then you need to take your car to a mechanic. Don't forget to get a quote for a repair.

Adjusting Timing Chain


Push rod,you have two different size,or firing order is wrong. The intake push rod are 5 3/4 inch long, the exhaust are 6 inches long,Disable the spark and crank the engine the sound should be smooth and even,if its not correct the push rods.If it is correct the firing order

Yes! No need for the engine to come out at all. But there is going to be alot of parts coming out, you will need a manual from aoutozone or advance $14.99 It will tell you step by step.
