Question about Volkswagen Beetle

'99 Beetle making rattling sound

I drive a 1999 new Beetle, manual transmission, with approx. 81,000 miles. The sound only started today. It happens when I depress the clutch or when I'm in gear, but not giving it gas. The check engine light also popped on about 15 miles after I noticed the new sounds. Otherwise, the car drives and shifts well.

This just happened to me. One of the clamps holding the catalytic converter rusted and broke. It cost $100 to fix. Get it fixed before your catalytic converter starts dragging along the pavement!

SOURCE: grinding noise while driving.

Possible causes:

a) a brake disc shield is too close to the disc, and it's coming into contact in the circumstances you outline

b) pebbles stuck between the disc shield and the disk

c) dried out wheel bearings

d) worn Universal Joints in the drive shafts

e) worn A/C pump

f) worn alternator

g) worn water pump

Is the noise still present above 15 miles an hour and past 1500 rpm when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. gearbox in neutral?). The answer to this question may help you to pinpoint the source. I know it's stating the obvious but the fact that you're hearing a grinding sound means it's caused by something that is moving relative to something else. Again this should help narrow down the cause.

SOURCE: 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5S, Check Engine Light Problem.

this problem could be caused by the mass air flow censor, i had the same problem with my car. it is really pricey at the dealer so you might want to check elsewhere for this part. I found one at a scrap yard for 85% less that the dealer and i also got life time warranty, the dealer does not offer any warranty on this part.

When im driving and i reach 20mph it jerks when it changes gears. what do u think the problem is

Check the fluid level in the transmission. You may be "running out" of fluid needed to shift to second.
You can try changing the transmission fluid and adding a small amount of Lucas transmission additive it may help a balky solenoid. Fords don't have a filter for you to change, but do offer a add-on type on the line to the radiator.

If the engine is running when turning steering then it sounds like a loose alternator drive belt, if the engine is switched off and the noise is coming from inside the car at the steering wheel area it will be the steering wheel coil spring swicth gear

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 liter with 81,000 miles is clunking into reverse? is anything wrong? should i be worried

clunking is not a good sound on ANY vehicle. neither is clicking, clacking etc...! I see where there are two possibilities here, and both require that you get under the truck and look around a bit. BUT both are easy and inexpensive...that would be to look at the transmission mounts and make sure they are not worn too bad...and the other is your everyday u-joint may be bad. if you find a bad u-joint,and can spring an extra 15 bucks, replace them all, cause as sure as 1 fails, the other will soon.

My 1999 new beetle won't start

Sounds like the battery is dead..Sometimes you have to clean the jumper cables and terminal on the battery to make a good connection try that and let your battery charge for a few minutes before trying to start it. If that doesnt work you may have a seized starter! Good Luck!

Did you drive and burn out the transmission, or did you quickly stop and shut down, just loseing all the tranny fluid?. If its not wiped out, you can probably just buy anew pan, gasket , and fluid to fix it. You doing it approx $125. A rebuilt transmisiion approx $2000
