Skipping engine Runs fine, then skips--- exhaust turns black, then runs fine exhaust normal. I changed the plugs, would it be more likely a coil pack or fuel filter?

WHAT ENGINE IS THERE,??????? 3;.7,4.6, 5.7?
AND SPARK MUST BE GOOD TO ALL SPARK PLUGS NOT JUST
it cranks fast,and starts and runs, or runs slow and misfires
tell it does good and bad,
my wild wild guess, it cranks
it starts , it runs and stalls.
and all fuse are good
and you failed to scan it?
if get P03xx errors , all those matter for next steps

3.7 uses only 6 coil packs
and 4.7up use 8 coil packs for v8 called COPS.
all must be good COPs
all must have good COP boots
all must have good park plugs, not 100k over miles. and gapped correctly
at least new boots and plugs replace.
and clear air cleaner.
not using a scan tool to see what is up, is costly for guessing parts.

Timing could have jumped. Could be a bad head gasket also. even possible to be a small hole in piston check the cylinder for compression. Check the fuel injector to that cylinder if you have bad air to gas mixture it will throw a code of misfire change fuel filter check fuel injector to see if clogged. most likely it is the fuel injector .

Have you checked the coil pack and module under the coil pack? It could be cracked or have debris around the connection.

hi the engine is not skipping the problem is the engine is miss firing
that is caused by a bad .spark plug or -wires-or coil pack - when was the last time the
car had a tune up . check spark plug connections

I would have them take a good look at the fuel preasure and also the coil pack, as the car may run good at times and then skip whenever,hope this helps, also have they scanned the computer for stored codes as if its skipping the check engine light must be on.

Possible partially plugged catalytic converter? The pop may be unburned fuel igniting. I would want to check the exhaust manifold pressure. Have a helper hit the gas pedal and back off several times and feel the exhaust flow, if it doesn't seem to increase in relation to the engine speed increases, and/or it gets extremely hot, compared to a normally running car.that is a good indicator of a plugged cat.
If you also get a pop, especially if it includes a burst of exhaust as, that is an additional indicator.

it could be slightly out of time. check and make sure your distributor is not loose. or possibly a bad coil pack..or even a crossed plug wire

Are the plug leads on the right plugs. If you have mixed up the firing order, even on two plug you will have all kind of drama,

Look at the wire and plug to cylinder 2, for cracks or damage, if nothing is found run a compression test need 100psi min, and then check the injector, you need to meshure resistance with a multimeter, and compare to other injectors something like 12 to 15 ohms would be good i think.

make sure you have the correct plug wires going to the correct cylinders. sounds simple enough but my friend made the same mistake on his 98 tahoe and he's been a professional mechanic for 15 yrs
