Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 1987 camaro Iroc z28 , it has a 350 small block.... I'm having problems , i put a new battery, alternator and starter in and have no power won't even turn over completely nothing .i checked all the wires and connection came across a fusible link that goes to the starter that was a lil melted,so I changed it and the other link as well , my gauges work but my headlights , radio and interior lights dont work either , so now I tore my shifter apart to check my nuetral safety switch and I have power to that ,I also dropped my steering colum to check the ignition switch ... I'm clueless on what do to or look for now ... If anybody has any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks

Did you replace the battery and alternator at the same time?Sometimes if you have a bad alternator and you put a new battery in,the bad alternator can completley drain your battery.

When you say it will not turn over, i think you mean that the starter does not turn???
Re check the starter connection, attention to the starter solenoid wiring. Good luck

Have you changed out ignition module, inside lower section of distributor? And if so, did you disconnect battery when you did? If you didn't disconnect battery it probably fried new module.

sounds like your wires may have got crossed and when you went to hook it back up the solonoid got shorted out... go back to square one, follow your wires and make sure positive wires stay positive and negative wires stay negative, then hook your battery up and try, if you get just a click, is it your battery? make sure it is charged, check the ground cable at the battery, the engine, the body and the starter, still nothing? have the starter tested.

Starter on a 1987 Chevrolet camaro irocz

What about it???
Location?
Bolted to the bottom rear of the block on the passenger side.
How to remove?
Some starters are larger than others. You may have to unbolt the exhaust Y pipe (down pipes from the exhuast manifolds)
Disconnect the battery,
Jack the car up and support it on stands,
disconnect the battery cable from the starter. There may also be at least on or two smaller wires on that same starter lug.
Dosconnect the small wire from the "S" terminal of the starter,
Remove the two bolts that go straight up from the bottom of the starter. The starter is heavy and gravity aint helping!

If the replacement starter makes a screeching sound when used, you may need to install shims between the starter and the engine block where it bolts up. Most the time the new starter will come with a few shims.

Fuel pressure? Do you hear the fuel pump running? Read the codes to see if ECM is still alive. Do you have spark at the plugs? Remember all motors need 3 things to run air, fuel, and fire at the right time.

Fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. A shop can do a fuel pressure pretty easy. You could do it to, you just have to spend 50 to buy a tester, or spend 20 to have a shop do it.
