2001 Ford Ranger 3.0L V6 Timing Chain Issue

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger w/ a 3.0L V6. I am not totally sure what happen to it. One day, (while a friend was driving it) it all of the sudden stopped running. I took it to a garage and the mechanic said that he couldn't get it to turn over and instead of charging me a ton of money to tear it down he suspected it was the timing chain and that I should just replace the entire engine. However I have heard that even if the timing chain went out, that doesnt mean that the valves are bent? Can someone help me determine if this is the case or not? Thanks!

Suggest that you take it to an accredited service center that has experience on your make of car
if the chain has broken it can jam in the gears and guides preventing the engine from turning over
the book does not mention it as an interference engine so there will be every possibility of no valve damage
AT this point from your statement, another engine is not the desired option but a properly qualified mechanic is

If the quote was ridiculously high
the mechanic didn't want the job

you could take the rocker covers off and check the cam chain timing marks

first picture is the crank chain of that engine heavy duty one
front of the motor ......take a few things off
remove timing chain cover
and there is that one
second picture
there are chains kits for the cam shafts

as for engine not turning over

if motor is stuck solid and no movement back or forward
on the crank
oil pump may have failed and seized the engine

mechanic would be right
the original engine rebuild will be expensive because of the internal damage

if that is the case source a used motor and drop that in

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Ranger V6 timing chain

Hello;
The Ford motors are pretty good. I had 280K on a 2.9 V-8 that only needed the oil changed every 3K. Unless you have fluctuatuation in the timing then you should be ok.
These engines use a chain rather than a belt and have excellent life.
Thanks;

SOURCE: while driving my 2001 Grand Am 2.2 Echo engine the timing chain broke. Does this mean my valves are bent?

The only way to tell is to pull it apart and inspect the head and valves to see what damage was done, sometimes no damage,sometimes major damage.

At how many mi do i change cam chain

Les, The chain in the 2.3 is to last as long as the engine, normally if some thing was to happen, chain guides would wear first and you would likely here a rattling noise that would alert you to have things checked. This engine is known as an interference engine, meaning if chain did slip/break, it could cause real damage to engine valve train and pistons. If it would give you piece of mind and you have over 200,000 on it, have i changed. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

Does a 2003 ford ranger 2.3 liter have a chain, gear, or timing belt?

The 2.3 uses a timing belt with an tension idler adjustment. Replacement is straight forward, just make sure to mark upper and lower cog pulleys before removing the old belt so that you can keep the timing in sync.

When should the timing belt be repalced on a 1988 Ford Ranger V6"

This truck should have a timing chain, not a belt. If the engine is running fine and there are no noises such as the chain hitting the timing cover, you are OK.

No Engine Warning Light, but low engine power/shifting problems

well they dont have a timing belt they have a timing chain which is nice but i would take it to a mechanic with a ford scan tool to diagnose it its really hard to diagnose these newer vehicles over the net these days! it could be so many things from throttle position sensor to rev limiter issue!

Help

I will assume you are referring to the timing procedure for a replacement timing belt (4 cyl) or timing chain (V6) With the V6 timing chain you simply line up the timing marks on the two sprockets so that they are pointing directly toward each other, crankshaft sprocket with the mark pointing straight up, camshaft mark straight down. With the 2.3 L 4 cylinder engine, you must first position the crankshaft at TDC, and then position the oil pump and camshaft sprockets with their timing marks to line up with their respective marks on the inner cover. Install the belt and release the spring tensioner to let it adjust itself, tighten the tensioner bolt, and turn the engine over for 2 rotations (always clockwise as viewed from the front, never backwards). Make sure the marks still line up, loosen the tensioner, allow it to retension itself, and tighten the tensioner bolt. If the oil pump sprocket is not timed correctly, the camshaft position sensor signal will be incorrectly timed.
