Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1966 ford bronco

My bronco will sometimes start up without having to put gas or other starter in the carburetor but then it will idle until the gas runs out and quit. after a while it will run fine. The second problem is when i give it a little throttle it starts to die down but if it flutter it to a higher rpm then its fine. why would it do this.

Is the automatic choke working correctly ?
And is the carb leaking internally so that there is no liquid gasoline in it when you first start it up ?

SOURCE: my car will start and idle fine sometime and sometime it dies and dies when put in gear

Engine stalls cold or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

I have an 83 bronco with a 351w i changed to a small rv cam and replaced the timing gears and chain. It will start and idle fine but when I put it in gear it will back fire and sputter when i give it gas....

You may need to adjust the timing via the distributor. Usually when changing the cams in older engines some custom tweeking is needed. You also may need to slightly adjust the fuel pressure when changing the cam. Is this engine have a throttle body or a carburetor?

Hello, why type of fuel do you use? You could have water in your fuel??. If you are living where the weather is very hot and your having to buy fuel with alcohol 10% or more don't buy this type of fuel. Your 1988 Ford Bronco II is carburetored, and the alcohol will start boiling causing vapor locking this Ford Bronco II. One reason is that early model used an open fuel system and none injectors. With the alcohol additive will low the boiling point of the fuel causing it to boil away; therefore, carburetor can't operate on fuel vapors it has to be liquid. GB...stewbison

Check the battery cables for corrosion near the battery terminal end. Sometimes it builds up under the rubber insulation. I would check the ground wire that runs from the battery to the engine block.

Sounds like a fuel mixture/vacuum problem. Vacuum advance line on the distributor could be loose/leaking/collapsed.
