Ford map sensor

The car gets spark, and the gas pump and filter are both fine, teh car acts like it wants to start but just doesnt catch and turn over. put new gas in it, was thinking of putting new mass airflow sensor into the car but now im not so sure that is the problem. any ideas or suggestions?

we tried that, and it still wouldnt catch, so im thinking its something not actual fuel related.. a sensor of some sort. but im not sure where to turn or which to look at.. is there a map sensor on the 1998 contour?. we were thinking maybe the mass airflow sensor, but ive had one vehicle that already had that problem and it was doing something totally different, it would actually start and run but just very bad. this one wont pop off and start at all.

If you have spark and compression, none of the other sensors are in play until after the engine starts. So if it won't start on carb cleaner, I would say you don't have spark or compression like you should have.

ok, thank you, do you have an idea what it could be thats keeping it from stopping from starting? the fuel pump is engaging. im just not sure what is stopping this car from engaging

If the engine is getting spark at the right time, and has normal compression, and no fuel to the injectors, you should be able to get it to start by spraying carb cleaner into the throttle body.
That will tell you if it is a fuel problem.

SOURCE: car turns over, but won't start

Too many choice.
3 main areas are fuel, spark, air.
Try a shot of ether, if it fires at all, it is a fuel problem.
Then we can get into more detail.

SOURCE: car wont start. turns over but wont catch.

The fuel pumpmay have failed. Try having someone turn the key to the ON position while you listen under the car near the fuel tank for the fuel pumo to hum. If it does not, or it sounds like it is grinding, then it may have failed. A pressure test with a gauge would be need to check for proper pressure.

SOURCE: where is coolant temp sensor and knock sensor on 95 nissan maxima

Mine usually stalled coming out the driveway. I went thru replacement of 6 coils and plugs with almost no improvement on my 2000 maxima. Ultimately the mass air flow sensor was replaced. All the engine codes from check engine light would make you think the engine needs overhaul, due to the nature of resultant bad engine performance. You can buy maf sensor $100 online. 5 minutes to install it. I tried cleaning it, but it made no difference until I replaced it. After that it was like 50 more horsepower.

new spark plugs this decade. (a tune up?0
the filter is part of all 60k tuneups. letting it clog wrecks good pumps.
my wild guess, its lack of fuel flow, do to old filter.
or low fuel pressure.
car is identical to a Corolla. so is not unique or rare as some Geo cars are.
the cam belt not changes, invites valve kissing piston tops. BOOM
end of engine. (costs more to fix then worth of car)
the word is bogging, my engine bogs
if if bogs WOT (wide open throttle) and dont catch up < ITS NOT THE TPS. ever.
tps bad causes short bogs, called hesitations.
The map sensor , is what measure air flow and the ECU matches fuel to this air flow.
my guess, is it does that, but fuel pressure is like 15PSI, bad.

Fuel filter or maybe bad gas

Car not starting or getting gas

Someone needs to check the fuel pump relay and the fuel pressure.
Could be electrical, the fuel filter, or a weak pump among other things.

I have spark thru the plugs and fuel thru the fuel filter but the car will not start. It cranks over and has fired a couple of times but will not catch. I have checked the fuel pump, and replaced the fuel...

If you have spark then it is not the crank sensor. Try starting it with the throttle all the way open. Get some air in the engine. If it acts like it wants to start then you have probably gas fouled the plugs. If you haven't replaced the plugs in a while, now would be a good time. This happens alot in the winter time.

Coils and wires are the most likely culprits as they never get replaced hardly ever. You cant really test a coil, you can check for resistance on the plug wires but that doesnt tell you if the insulation is bad on them.
