Starter motor makes clicking sound but wont turn over

These General tips are not specific to any make or type of car.

Is there enough current in the battery to turn the starter over?

Put the vehicle in gear and rock it back and forth. if the starter is jammed in place on the flywheel gear you may be able to release it this way.

Check the solenoid is working. Can you do a substitution test?

Does the starter motor turn if you short it directly to positive/ground? (depending on vehicle polarity)?

1998 land rover discovery. Just replaced spark plugs Bosch. I have a problem that I need help with. Took plugs out, rolled it back off of ramps in neutral. Then I placed spark plugs back in and now it...

the starter relay is not making contact or the wire going to the starter has bad connection OR starter brushes are sticking and not making contact with the starter rotor. Try tapping on the starter with a hammer--use a long screwdriver or metal rod if necessary. Check the connection on the starter motor and the solenoid. Check the headlight brightness when you try the starter.

Wont start after it gets warm

This is an interesting fault. The click you hear is the relay, that puts power on the starter motor, but you do not hear the starter motor turn. (Or do you?)
First suspect is the battery, they do get old and tired, but you say after a while it cools down and starts, so its probably not the battery. Check the cables to and from the starter motor, and the fat earth cable from the engine to the body (in the engine bay) make sure they are undamaged, clean and the connections are not loose. IF all looks ok I suspect the starter motor. remove the starter motor and clean it.

Hi my 95 model vs commondore would not start, charged battery it wont windover and makes this clicking noise.

the clicking noise is from the starter motor not getting enough charge to wind over properly...check battery is holding a full 12 volt charge.
if commodore is manual - put it into third gear and get someone to help you rock the car back and forward (with handbrake off and ignition off of course)if starter motor is 'jamming' this can release it. ive seen many bush mechanics hit the side of the starter motor in holdens with a hammer to release it also.( with an auto this is your only option.)
other wise if battery is proven to be good - go to the wreckers and buy another starter motor.
