I recommend taking it to a mechanic and having him hook it up to a computer.
Some Auto Parts stores, like AutoZone, will hook it up for free.
Hooking it up to a computer won't fix the problem, but it will tell you why the engine light is on, and how to fix it. That, in turn, might fix the rough ride.
