Question about 2001 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Change front wheel bearing

I have had my front wheel bearings replaced twice, and was told that entire assembly had to be replace, and that the new ones were faulty. Now I was told by someone else, that it is not the full assembly that would be replaced, just the bearings as they are press in. Can you clear this up for me? Thanks in advance.

"left front tire locks up"

as in "won't turn"???
you probably have a seized wheel bearing/hub assembly or frozen brake caliper - you can remove the wheel hub/bearing assembly yourself in about an hour with common hand tools (an impact wrench will really speed this up) - you can rent the wheel nut removal socket at most auto parts stores - you will have to have an automotive shop with a bearing press to remove and replace the wheel bearing ($30-$60) - if the caliper is seized - replace the entire assembly (and probably the ruined brake rotors and pads)

Is it possible to replace a front wheel bearing at home on a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer?

You would be better off replacing the entire hub assembly. Yes, bearings need to be pressed into place and this requires a hydraulic press.

Front wheel bearing is knocking

to replace it: take off the wheel, brake caliper and brake pads. Then you will see the entire hub assembly. Since it's a sealed hub assembly, you can't just repack the bearings. The entire hub assembly needs to be replaced. It was like $90 when I did it on mine. Once you have the assembly off just replace it with the new one and put the calipers and pads back on and it should be good to go at that point.

2wd front wheel need to replace bearings or hub assembly which is best

A Front Wheel Drive Vehicle Can Have Two Types Of Rear Wheel Bearings: Serviceable Bearings, Or Nonserviceable, Sealed Bearings. When Sealed Bearings Fail, The Bolts Holding The Bearing And Hub To The Axel Or Control Arm Must Be Removed. When Installing The New Bearing Assembly, Torque The Bolts To Specifications. Some Manufacturers require The Use Of New Fasteners When Rear Bearings And Hubs Are Replaced.

When A Serviceable Wheel Bearing Is Used, The Bearing Can Be Disassembled And Packed With Grease. It Is Serviced Like A Front Wheel Bearing On A Rear-wheel-Drive-Car.

Replacing front wheel bearings on a 2004 Suburban

The front wheel bearings are sealed units, and must be replaced with the entire hub assembly. They do not need periodic cleaning/replacing as they did in the old days, if they are not making noise do not bother with them.

My camry is making a loud whining noise. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was probably the front bearings. The noise only happens when the wheels are spining. My question is how do I replace these....

Hi there. Most, if not all front wheel bearings these days are pressed into the front wheel hub assembly and to replace these is not normally a DIY job. Because new bearings need to be pressed into the hub assembly, a machine shop press ought to be used and the job undertaken by competent individuals. My advice if you do intend undertaking the work yourself is to remove the hub assembly and then have a machine shop operative remove the old bearings and have the new bearings pressed-in for you. Hope this helps, Scottech.

Need wheel bearing replacement

unfortunately your bearing assembly is a sealed unit and you have to purchase it as a complete part. they do have a way to change out the bearing at a shop, however the labor cost involved would most certainly be alot more than a replacement it's self. I have come across this problem many times and it's not as easy to switch them out as you have been told. i hope this helps. (note) to repalce them on your vehicle if you don't do the work yourself have a small shop do it not a dealer shop. the cost will be alot less. the labor time should be no more than 2 hrs. that is roughly about no more than 120- 150 dollars for the labor . if the place you take it to quotes you way more than that take it somewhere else... good luck please rate this
