Question about 2000 Dodge Stratus

1 Answer

Does the 2000 dodge stratus has an automatic shut down relay that triggers when the oil pressure is to low?

The engine shut down after the oil light came on after the check i found a hole in the oil filter. i replace the oil filter and added oil back to the engine but the car still will not start. all i get is some clicking sound like a relay is not triggering.

The CPU has read low oil pressure and has shut down the system to protect the engine which it has done. However it cannot tell when you add oil so to get it to change you will have to reset the CPU.. Possible removing the battery lead for 5-10 minutes will reset or have a code reader instrument reset it.

SOURCE: Check engine light after oil change

If it is the service engine light, go to Auto Zone and they will put a scanner on it for free and diagnose the code. I may have fixed the same problem with my daughter's 2004 Dodge Stratus 2.7L V-6 a few months ago. Is it the "Oil Pressure Light" or the service engine light? My daughter's car had a sporadic low oil pressure light. Checking the actual oil pressure is more work, so I guessed it was the Oil Pressure sending unit and it was. When I took it off it the electrical connection was soaked in oil due to some internal failure. I put a new oil pressure sending unit on and the oil pressure light has not come back on.

If you remove the wire connector and there is no oil on anything, try sparying it with electrical parts cleaner and putting it back together. If the oil light is still on you will need to replace the sending unit.

It is an easy job, but it must be done from the underside of the engine in a tight space. Make sure the enginer is cool because the sending unit is close to the exhaust. There is an aluminum heat shield with three (3) bolts that needs to be removed and is most of the work. You will need to plug the hole with a clean rag or wait for the next oil change to do the job and replace it after you drain the oil.

If the easy steps above do not solve the problem then you may have bigger trouble like a bad oil pump, or worse yet, a really worn out engine that needs a rebuild.

Just last week, I has a SEL scanned at Auto Zone and it turned out to be the Engine Coolant Temperatuere Sensor. I removed the electrical connection and sprayed it with electric parts cleaner and put it back together. No light since then. Good Luck!

SOURCE: dodge stratus check engine light

Try disconnecting the battery for a few seconds, unless you have some anti-theft system on your vehicle, that may get messed up by the disconnect. If you do, then I;d wait it out, I think it's about 50 starts & it should disappear on it's own, if that doesn't work, zip in to dealer & see what they'd charge to reset it for you.

SOURCE: 1996 Dodge Stratus stalls when starting

I had this problem with my 99 Durango and went to AutoBeef.com to discover this was a major problem with 98 & 99 Durangos. The fix was easy -- PCM "brain" was exchanged with a refurbished PCM "brain" from an online PCM company in Florida. You can google as I can't remember name of company. I called them and they said - Yep this is the fix -- the guys told me 3 screws all I had gone to several mechanics and dealers -- none could figure it out. I was so grateful that someone gave me the clue I needed.

While going down highway (at) 70 mph, why did car just turn off?

Low oil would not show up on the engine computer, but low oil pressure would. If the oil light did not come on before the engine stopped, its possible you toasted the engine.

Could be a problem with the oil pump, the oil pressure sensor, clogged oil lines, or something more major.

2000 Mitsubishi eclipse the oil light came on and my car shut down. I added 1 quart of oil and it was full but the car still won't start.

The oil light does not indicate the car is low on oil (based on your discription) it indicates the oil pressure is low, the no start is most likely due to this low pressure and the fuel pump has been cut off to prevent damage to the engine from low oil pressure. Please have a shop locate the cause of the low oil pressure warning and repair it as needed. It could be a false light or a real one, which means if you drove it very far you may have damaged the engines bearings.

2000 DODGE STRATUS. OIL LIGHT

I would have the oil pressure checked with a pressure gauge. Most likely you have low oil pressure. Not much you can do about this problem now. A used engine swap is probably the cheapest answer. Have it checked before buying an engine. Could have a bad wire or plug at the sending unit.

You need to have that chk'd out. Even low oil pressure can damage the engine let alone no oil pressure. Ck your oil level. It is a serious issue to have that light on. Good Luck, _Ned_

My 2000 Stratus wont start either

if your check engine light does not go on when you have the key on engine off then you should check first the fuse box for the shut down fuse under the hood next to the battery if the fuses are ok then check the shut down relay on the cover of fuse box you can see which is the shut down relay remove the relay and with a test light connected to ground with the key on engine off you should have to terminals turn on your test light if not then your problem could be pcm if you get light on two then check for the relay it may be faulty but your check engine light should turn on when you have key on engine off good luck

2000 Stratus won't start after battery change

Which wire did you hook up first? If you hooked up red wire first you may have took out the PCM/BCM The theft light may be flashing or on, check owners manual or call dealer to find out specific's. But check connections make sure they are tight and do not move, check battery voltage.
