Bill, I would be really tempted to take the system apart and bleach it.
You probably do not want to do that. Dealerships and good detailing shops offer A/C mold and mildew services and normally guaranteed. I will post some other methods used by Tech.s and others that they say work and are not expensive to do. Do change your interior filters for sure if your car is equipped.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

When I turn the air conditioning on in my 2013 GMC Terrain there is the smell of mold. Apparently the air conditioner doesn't get rid of any moisture left after using it.

There is a procedure for this condition. GM says to flush the core with a cleaning agent they sale. I have found Lysol Fresh scent does a much better job of curing the condition.Spray the Lysol in the outside air intake vent while the vehicle is running with it set to max a/c and fan speed also on max. It will take about 1/4th can to fully clear the mildew smell and stop it from growth. When parking the vehicle always put it in max a/c position so the fresh air outside the vehicle will dry out the coil.

Spray Lysol, entire can, into air intake at base of windhield. Fan on low speed. You are smelling mold & mildew. Lysol will kill it. May take a few applcaitions.

Hi, i would like to know why when i run the a/c ,the next day i get that steal smeal from the vents. i changed the cabin air filters ,but still the smell remains. please help. AD

This smell is caused by mold and mildew build up in the AC air passages and on the heater and the AC evaporator cores in the dash, u can spray LYSOL mold and mildew remover into the system at the air intake in front of the windshield with the blower turned to max, use about 1/4 can, then turn off the system and let it sit for an hour, then turn it back on with full heat, let that run to dry out the chemical, this will cure the smell short term until the mold and mildew grow back, it is a fix we did often in the shop, the wetter the climate u live in the worse the problem

09 sonata with 1000mils on it with a/c off foul smell comes from ventilation system with fan on. no problem when a/c is on

Does it smell like a dead animal? or just moldy mildew smell? If dead animal, get it out. If mold/mildew smell, treat it with an AC ventilation dodorizer.

2005 dodge ram 2500 nasty smell coming out of airconditioner, Why?

I suspect a mouse has found its way into the airbox and died, if this is true you may be able to somehow get some bleach down into the air box from the upper right handside defrost vent you must be creative perhaps a small funnel with a length of hose connected feeding it down through defrost vent , don,t use straight bleech use 50% water /50% bleach solution and line the floor and carpet with plastic to prevent damage to the carpet, if you don't like this remedy take it to the mechanic and he will dissassemble the A/C unit for a hefty fee I am soory for the bad news hopefully it is just mold/mildew. Good luck

Air conditioner

There is no filter, this smell is caused by mold/mildew in the system from normal condensation from the AC evaporator core, you can try Lysol, spray at the air intake in front of the windshield for about 20 seconds, turn of the system and let it set overnight, this will cure the problem for a few months, then you will have to treat it again, as the mold will regrow in the moist environment of the AC air distribution box.
