I have a 1998 subaru forester and when it is in park it makes a grinding noise, same thing in neutral as well, all other gears are fine, also it got stuck inbetween park and revers the otherday and i had to kick the shifter while my foot was on the brake to release it, believe me it was a last resort ! i finally got pissed !

Your torque converter isnt releasing, probably because your idle rpms are too high.

SOURCE: gear shifter is stuck in park and is hard to push button in

Have the brake lights checked to verify they work, if they are not working the system will stay locked in park, most likely the problem is a degfective brake light switch.

SOURCE: Stuck in Park

check your fuses if they're all good then its your park safety neutral switch that's bad.

SOURCE: 1999 Lincoln Town Car shifter stuck in park

Look at the swith on the brake pedal, it shoud have two green wires on it. Make sure it is not melted or the wire is broken. If it is damaged you can connect the 2 wires together to get it into gear, but this should be temporary as it bypasses the neutral safety switch.

Gear shifter won't shift into reverse or park

When you "muscled it into neural" you broke the shifter. Most likely it will take a replacement shifter to repair.

2002 Subaru Forester. I have a humming/grinding

I would suspect wheel bearing first
Test just like the front
Wheel off the ground
grab the top and bottom of the tire and rock

However...If I remeber correctly the rear uses axle bearings which are pressed on and difficult to diangose

Therefore... I'd advise you seek a Subau dealer since so few tech see a Forester even once a month

1998 Subaru Forester

Would need to know more. Did the 'check engine' light come on about the time you first noticed this happening? If so, have the code checked for diagnosis. I would suspect FUEL TRIM error (or similar) in the computer compensating the fuel injection when the car is put in gear versus in Park or Neutral when cold.
