Hi.

The problem is either vehicle speed sensor or wiring harness going to sensor. In some case the ECM is defective.

Ensure that you have already replaced the VSS with good ones.

If you have not replaced them yet, then the sensor can be tested reading the waveform. This is done connecting both VSS input and output wires to a machine. The one below is a good VSS wave at 37 mph:

If the waveform is incorrect, the sensors must be replaced, as the ECM returns P0722 when VSS output is incorrect, or when there is no output.

A second test can be done reading the sensor impedance and voltage. Connect a multi-meter to the sensor. Set first on Ohms reading (impedance). A good sensor will read 560-680 Ohms at 20C (68F).
Set multimeter on Volts. Touch rapidly the sensor with a magnet and pull magnet away. The sensor will emit a weak voltage pulse. If that does not happen, then the sensor is broken. Ensure that multimeter is on high volt scale.Voltage will be quite low:

The VSS are located on the wheel shaft. Here a picture:

The VSS is connected to the ECM.

If you have already replaced the sensors you need to check the wiring harness to the ECM.

The wiring harness is tested checking that each wire going to the ECM has continuity. This is done reading impedance between each connector in the sensor , and the respective connector in the ECM. Impedance must be zero or a very low value. If it reads infinity, then the wire is broken.
A second test is done reading impedance between the two different wires at ECM connector. Impedance must be the same as at VSS contacts on sensor. If impedance is zero, then there is a short. Ensure that you choose a proper Ohms scale while doing the test.

If you have already replaced the VSS, repair or replace the wiring harness. The ECM failure returning this code is very uncommon. At most you may have a defective ECM connector.

Well code 722 means the computer and speedo is not getting a signal from the speed sensor in the transmission.
So your speedo should not be working when that code is active.

P0722: Transmission speed signal missing.

There is a turbine speed sensor that detects and reports the speed of the transmission shaft to the computer to help determine shift points. Sometimes this duty is shared by the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) but if your speedometer still works, then the VSS is good and you should replace the TSS (turbine speed sensor). I would guess you are either stuck in 1st gear all the time or your transmission shifts erratically.

Not having more specific info as to the behavior of your vehicle it's hard to say. what the problem might be. Computer codes are only a place to startt.
The P0722 is for Output Speed Sensor 2 Circuit No Signal. This means that the transmission control module is not receiving a signal from the Output Speed Sensor.
I am assuming (based on this information) that your vehicle is front wheel drive and has an automatic transmission. If you have a different powertrain (i.e. quattro all wheel drive or a manual transmission), write back and let me know.
This P0722 is a common fault on front wheel drive automatic transmissions (called a CVT). The bad thing is that the output speed sensors are part of the transmission control module and the only way to repair that is to replace the transmission control module. The module is located inside the transmission. Expect to pay $1000 to $1500 for the module and another $700 to $900 for labor.
There is a possibility it could be the Neutral safety switch. They an get dirty and cause problems so spend a cople of dolars checking this before laying out the bigger bucks.
Testing Neutral Safety Switch

Required Tools:
Test Light/Voltage-meter
Wiring schematic
Neutral safety switch location (component location)

Test Procedure
Locate the neutral safety switch
Disconnect the wiring connector at the switch
Using a test light or volt-meter test for power at the wiring harness with the key in the "engine crank" or the gear shifter in the "reverse" position. (do not start the engine)
If power exists reconnect the neutral safety switch and probe outgoing wires at the connector.
If no outgoing power is present the switch has failed and needs to be replaced.
Tip : If the engine will not crank over with the car in "park" push down the brake pedal and try cranking the engine over with the car in "neutral". What you are doing is bypassing the "park" position in the switch and now are using the little used neutral circuit. If in neutral the engine starts the switch is probably bad.
Tip: Sometimes a neutral safety switch can become misadjusted. This switch adjustment can change due to normal wear of mechanism that controls switch slider.
Other complications can occur if there is a loose connection somewhere in the system. While this condition is not a shorted circuit problem, it is a condition that simply breaks the flow of electricity intermittently. To troubleshoot this problem consult a car repair manual to locate the wiring schematic for your car. Repair the broken or shorted connection as needed and recheck system. Electrical problems are less complicated when the proper information is available.

You just need to replace the sensors. If you are mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself. If you don't feel comfortable working on an expensive transmission, take it to the dealer.
