Gear shifter stuck in neutral and drive. cannot shift into park to start vehicle

the vehicle will start in neutral so if it doesn't there will be a problem in another place . If the selector is a cable operation check the cable for frayed wires or failure that is preventing it from moving

Changing gears is very stiff and mechanical/cluncky. 105000km. cable stretch. if so. solution

IF you have a cable connected gear shift and it is not moving smoothly then the insides of the outer cable will be worn out and the inner is frayed and jamming. Replace the entire cable unit.

The gear shift is getting hard to put into gear?

The shifter cable must be getting frayed internally. You'll have to get it replaced.

Transmission is shifting hard and slow to pull on a 95 silouette also makes clucking sounds while accelerating

Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.

Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Easy fix in pan. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Chevy Impala can't shift out of park

sometimes this happens if the brake light switch is broken - the car thinks that you do not have your foot on the brake, so will not shift out of park . strange however about the ABS light being on. i would get a garage to get the fault codes read

Won't shift!!

I had the same problem and found that it was an electronic shift switch with frayed wires. I thought the transmission was going bad, but after replacing that switch (externally mounted on the transmission) it works fine. Much cheaper than a transmission. I probably could have saved more by finding the part aftermarket on-line.
