Question about 2003 Ford Windstar
My 2003 Ford Windstar started running rough a couple days ago. It sputters and hesitates upon acceleration, especially at high speeds. As soon as this started I noticed water leaking from beneath the car under the engine. I assume the two problems are related as they both occurred simultaneously.
How much the leaking of water is? It is usually common to find some drops of water beneath the engine due to the working of AC components. If it is the coolant, your car might have a leak somewhere in the radiator, hoses or water pump. However, this will again cause the engine temp gauge to rise. The rough running engine could be due to number of reasons like, clogged fuel or air filter, injectors, MAF sensor, O2 sensor etc. It is better to first try inspecting the spark plugs for their proper functioning; this will bring down the problem a bit. Also, if there is a CEL blinking it is better to get the codes read.

My hands barely fit behind there and when I reach back there I can't see the top of the distributor. Windstar tranny problem: just got off phone with Northway Transmission of Queensbury, NY Technician said the torque converter had destroyed itself. the pump drive spline in converter broke and took out fins in torque converter it's going to cost me nearly $1600.00 car has only 45000mi on it and I caught it rather quickly and DID NOT TOW had car moved by flatbed/ramp truck otherwise they would have had to completly tear down transmission. (over $2300.00)

Usually the fuel pressure regulator vac. hose pops off? If not listen for a slight whistling noise (vac leak).

Ok, there are many issues here that you will need to inspect. I recommend changing the fuel filter and pump as well. this will fix the hesitation. the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets will need to be replaced as well. this will stop the backfiring.
I also recommend checking and running a teat on the PCV valve and inspect the PCV hose as well. it could have a leak or a small crack on it.
Check the air filter and change if needed. this will help with acceleration issues as well. Next, i would run a check on all plugs and the complete wire set as well. change if needed.
Inspect the injectors for leaks and lose wires. make sure they are in good condition. replace any injectors that isn't firing properly.
Ok, there are some sensors that you will need to check as well. i will list them below.
SENSOR CHECK LIST--
1. Check the O2 sensors for worn wires.
2. Check the MAFS(Mas Air Flow Sensors) Check for Damaged, Loose, or Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor or Circuit.
3. Check the Air Cleaner Temperature Sensor. this sensor could be damaged ro have loose wires. check accordingly.
4. Check the Throttle Position Sensor. this device could be connected wrong or it may be faulty as well. replace if needed.
Be sure and inspect all the above and repair any problem spot you ruin across during your inspection.

remove the coil pack and look at bottom of it if it shows any cracks coil is bad very common on these vans if you have a noid light check for injector pulse on #4 if you have pulse and good blue spark most likely the injector is bad you have to remove upper plenum to get injectors out let me know how you make out
