Question about Mercury Cougar

Open Question

Why does my car rattle when I hit the smallest of bumps?

I have a 1999 Mercury Cougar and there is a slight rattle or shutter when going over bumps coming from the rear end of the car. Not sure what this noise is but it bothers the heck out of me, and should be fixable... just not findable. Like I said, not a constant noise, possibly suspension? help

there is a pivot point for your rear sway bar called the watts linkage that wears out the center bushing and will cause a rattle or clunk

Check sway bar. On some models as suspension sags, sway bar outer ends will contact the body, leaving a mark or dent just above the end, causing a bang over bumps. Only way to correct this is to change springs or add a spring lift.

SOURCE: front knocking noise/rattling

could also be a bad strut bearing if it does it at a stand still or you start hearing a twang sound it's in the strut section usualy also you might want to look at your lower controll arm bushings they will wear out sometimes faster than others and other bushings also look arround heck crawl under if you can and dont be afraid to us a desk lamp for light if you need it who cares what the neighbours think they dont pay for the repairs you do

Car dies when hitting bump or dip

dies as in you loose all power and it shuts off? if so check for the battery terminals and there tight, then follow the wires from the battery to where they go such as to the alternator and starter and check the ground wires.

1999 Mercury Cougar Starts and then Shuts down. In the beginning the car had a rattle in the TimingChain cover and was checked and it was fine, just that the Oil pressure was low and then the lifters...

Most engines have a low pressure shut-off OR the lifters no longer work with lack of oil.
Have someone check the REAL oil pressure with a gauge. They can thread a gauge into the Oil pressure sensor hole.
Since the oil pressure sender COULD be bad,you need this true reading.
It should run just long enough to give a reading,I hope.
I don't know if the OBD II codes would show the oil pressure.UIt doesn't on my Focus.I hope you get `er going, but the engine must have at least 25 psi oil pressure.Have you replaced the oil filter? don-ohio

Replaced all 4 struts, stills rattle in the front end, when steering turns and small bumps

Check your brake pads and calipers. Then check your heat shields for stones.
Some Ford products had bearings in the strut towers.
