a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Mechanic (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: symbols on dashboard
Since you don't have a manual, here are the three you need to worry about (other than the VERY obvious, the CEL, the brake, and the battery lights)
The little oil can on the left side of the cluster is oil pressure, and if the oil pressure light is coming on, you either have a bad sending unit, or you are pretty much shafted... the oil pressure light doesn't come on unless the pressure is REALLY Low. The gauge is the warning, the light comes on when it is too late (something like 2-3 psi).
On the right side of the cluster are two more, the one on the bottom, with the little vertical lines is the sensor in your radiator overflow bottle.
The one you are wondering about from your original problem is right above the radiator indicator, it is for windshield washer fluid level. when it comes on, check the fluid, but don't sweat it if the fluid is full, the sensor gos bad, mine went bad a while ago, and my light has been on in my 94N/A for the last 50k miles or so. This is one light it doesn't hurt too much to ignore.

I don't have access to the symbols, but you, as a BMW owner can log on to this site, and have access to the original manual for your BMW with diagrams of all the symbols and what they mean. Good luck, hope this helps. Curt

you need to have your obd3 Diagnostic Trouble Codes read Most auto parts stores will do this for you. This will give you a better idea where to start.

SOURCE: i have a key symbol
This is your security or anti-theft light. Check your owners manual first, but I have reset them on other cars by unhooking the negative battery cable for a minute or two, then using the key fob to lock and unlock the doors a couple of times. I believe your car has a microchip in the key, so make sure nobody tried to start it with a hardware store copy.
