SOURCE: just replaced master cylinder on 1990 aerostar and bled the brakes, still the pedal goes to floor and i have no brakes

Did you bench bleed the master cyl. before installing it? then when you installed the new master, did you bleed all 4 points? If yes, then check all for points for leaking caliper/s and leaking wheel cylinder/s. If the van has ABS, check the valve body for a bleeder screw and see if air bleeds out of it. If you've checked everything twice and did everything right then your new master cyl. may be defective.

Honestly your guess is as good as mine. But I don't think the master cylinder is NOT bad you still have air in the system. Get a big bottle of brake fluid bleed all four sides until you run out of fluid or your brakes work properly. You should divide the bottle's content in four, then use each quantity in each side. You'll be removing air and contaminated fluid from the system. Get a small hose that fits on the bleeders and an appropriate container. I have a good feeling if you do this your brakes will work just fine. I don't know how you are bleeding the brakes. I'll let you know the proper way just in case. This is a two man job, with the wheel off, have someone start the car. Have them pump the brakes a few times to get pressure. 1With the brake pedal UP open the bleeder, 2then have your assistant press the brake pedal all the way down and leave it completely pressed down. 3Close the bleeder valve, once close and only with the valve closed have'm release the brake. Repeat as necessary, bake depressed, open valve first then press brake. DO NOT depress until valve completly closed. Close valve THEN depress. Good Luck!

Why would you add fluid?
As the front pads wear,the fluid will go down, not an issue
If you keep opening the fluid resevoir,you will let moisture in.

For some reason these vehicles you need to bleed brakes several times, had same problem, so air hangs up in lines somewhere it apears. When you say brakes sticks, describe it better, locked up, or dragging on rotors?

Have a 99 Toyota camry n brake light is on after changing right front brake caliper


Master cylinder fluid piston has entered into a brake safe mode.
when the high pressure brake system is opened in any way, the brake master cylinder piston reaches to the far end of the master cylinder which trips the brake system warning light.

This brake light condition is due to sudden loss of brake fluid pressure on the right front brake caliper assembly during the replacement.

Left rear brake caliper bleed valve will ned to be "opened" until master cylinder piston travels into the opposite direction which "resets" the brake system warning light.

Dot 4 brake fluid recommened for most, but not all vehicles.
Reference vehicle to owners manual for replacement fluid is replaced under master cylinder brake system cap.

How do u replace the master cylinder on a 95 lincoln towncar?


  • Unplug the brake lines from master cylinder. Be careful with brake fluid spilling out, it is toxic and corrosive.If needed use a plastic container to collect fluid.
  • Disconnect electrical connectors.
  • Unscrew the nuts securing the master cylinder to the brake booster.
  • Remove master cylinder.
  • Perform procedure in reverse order to install the new master cylinder. After installation is complete, refill the master cylinder with brake fluid and perform brake bleeding procedure.Use only brake fluid stated in manufacturer specifications.
Here a diagram. The master cylinder is part 10 below reservoir part 9:

did you bleed all of the air from the master cylinder before you installed it, this has to be done. also when replacing the master cylinder, all 4 wheel cylinders will have to be bled, in order to get all of the air out of them. while doing the wheel cylinder bleeding , you will have to make sure that the master cylinder doe's not run out of brake fluid, check it each time you bleed a wheel cylinder , add brake fluid to the master cylinder each time or when it is getting low. hope that this has helped you.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
  1. Retainer and electrical connector from fluid level sensor.
  2. Drain brake fluid front mister cylinder reservoir.
  3. Reservoir hose from master cylinder. Plug hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  4. Brake pipes from master cylinder. Plug open pipes to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  5. Two attaching nuts.
  6. Master cylinder.
  7. Reservoir, if it is to he used on replacement master cylinder.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
  1. Reservoir onto master cylinder, as needed.
  2. Master cylinder on to power booster.
  3. Attaching nuts. Tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb. ft.).
  4. Brake pipes. Tighten brake pipe fittings to 15 Nm (11 lb. ft.).
  5. Reservoir hose onto master cylinder.
  6. Fill master cylinder reservoir to full level mark using only Delco Supreme 11 Brake Fluid, or equivalent DOT 3 brake fluid.
  7. Electrical connector to fluid level sensor, secure with retainer.
  8. Bleed hydraulic system.
  9. Recheck fluid level in reservoir

How to replace master cylinder. what is the relationship between it and the power steering?


If you have a hydor booster the power steering pump runs your power brakes, make sure power steering level is at max, to replace master cylinder, unscrew both brake line, then unbolt both nut that hold master cylinder 15mm nut's, remove master cylinder, fill new master cylinder with DOT 3 brake fluid, bench bleed new master cylinder, new master cylinder will come with a bleeder kit, before installing, then install new one.

REMOVING
Removing the master cylinder is really simple, only requiring a few steps. Keep in mind that brake fluid will eat the paint of the car. So use a plastic or vinyl type fender cover to protect the vehicle's paint. Brake fluid is water soluble so if you should get some on the paint, wash it off with plenty of water as quickly as possible.
  1. Using a siphon, an old turkey baster works great, empty the master cylinder reservoir and dispose of the old brake fluid in the proper manner.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector for the brake fluid level and/or brake pressure-warning switch, if your vehicle is so equipped.
  3. Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder with a line wrench. A line wrench is specially designed to remove and install hydraluic fittings without rounding them off.
  4. Remove the master cylinder mounting nuts, then the master cylinder.
  5. On non-power brake vehicles, disconnect the master cylinder linkage from the brake pedal underneath the dash.
  6. On models with separate fluid reservoirs, remove the reservoir.
REPLACING
Before installing the new master cylinder on the vehicle, it must first be bled using a specialized bleeder kit. The master-cylinder bleeder kit comes with tubing, clips and multiple adapters. Most new or rebuilt master cylinders come with a bleeder kit for that particular master cylinder.
  1. Begin by removing the cap.
  2. Follow the directions that come with the kit to select the suitable adapters, and then connect the adapters and tubes to the ports on the cylinder. The other ends of the tube extend down into the master cylinder, and are held in place by a plastic clip. Figure 2.
  3. With the bleeder kit installed, fill the master cylinder about halfway with new brake fluid. Use a large screwdriver to depress the valve assembly inside the master cylinder. If you do not have a vise you can mount the master cylinder on the vacuum brake booster and bleed the master cylinder.
  4. Small bubbles will appear in the fluid. Continue working the valve assembly until no more bubbles appear. This indicates that the cylinder has been thoroughly bled.Reverse the removal procedure to install the master cylinder, noting the following Refer to your service manual for any Master Cylinder Push Rod Adjustment procedures if your vehicle requires it.Bleed brakes as described under Brake Bleeding.Operate the brakes several times and check for external hydraulic leaks.This is fairly straightforward job. Replacing a master cylinder should take you about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the make and model of car. If you are rebuilding the master cylinder, add about another hour or so.

Can break master cylinder (kit) do as good job as a new master cylinder?


This is a Yes, and No reply.

YES,
if the mechanic insures that the bore of the brake master cylinder, is free of rust pits, and if not, uses a brake hone to smooth out the bore. Closer inspection will reveal if the pits are too deep, and the master cylinder is unusable.

YES,
if the rubber components that go into the bore of the brake master cylinder, are installed in the correct direction, all the components are assembled in the correct order, and are pre-lubed with a little bit of clean brake fluid, before installing.

NO,
if any of the above criteria is not met.

The main thing is that the Brake Master Cylinder is in good repair. In good shape. If we are discussing the original brake master cylinder, for a 1981 Ford F100 pickup truck, we are discussing a master cylinder that is 28 years old, and has seen a lot of wear.

As a metallic object, such as a brake master cylinder heats up, (Engine heat, or even just the sun shining on the vehicle), then cools down, the moisture that is always present in the air, will form in the master cylinder.

Forms in droplets, at the bottom of the master cylinder's reservoir. This moisture creates rust, when it touches the cast iron brake master cylinder casting.
The rust clogs the ports at the bottom of the reservoir, and goes down into the bore of the master cylinder.

Makes rust pits in the bore, and harms other master cylinder components, then goes into the brake lines, and onto the rest of the brake system.

Me?
For the cost of a rebuilt or new brake master cylinder, compared to the expense of the master cylinder brake kit, and your labor time, I would go with a rebuilt, or new one.

Also this is part of the Brake System, and there's no fooling around with brakes! Your life and/or someone else, Depends on those brakes!
