SOURCE: Replacing Pitman arm and idler arm on a K1500

You need to unbolt the steering box from the frame. You can do it with the lines still attached. Gently roll the steering box on its side. you can rent a pitman arm puller from autozone or advance auto.

Think positive, it can and has been done....

SOURCE: replace idler arm/pitman arm

Don't worry it is not too hard if you keep at. One "special tool" that you will need is a ball joint separator to separate the ball joint on the idler arm from the steering. When changing make sure to compare your replacement parts with the original and if necessary make a diagram of how things go together. On the bottom, there is a castle nut and a cotter pin. Remove the pin and loosen the nut then use the ball joint separator to remove the idler arm. (This is the hardest part of the job.) Then remove the remaining bolts and take the part off. Before putting the new idler arm make sure that you put the new grease fitting on it (and go ahead and squirt a little grease in it even though it already has some) and in between the new ball joint and the steering there should be a plastic bearing that slips into place. It's a pretty straight forward job and once you take a good look at it you will see what all needs to be done. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Goodluck!

How to replace a power steering gear box

Have the tires straight, lock or secure the steering wheel so it doesn't move. Remove the hoses and steering linkage from the box. Raise the front and remove the drivers tire. Remove the linkage from the pitman arm at the bottom of the box. Use a large hammer to break the linkage free from the arm, don't hit the threads. You will see 3 or 4 large bolts going threw the frame, remove them to drop the box. You will need a pitman arm removal tool to get the arm off the box. You can rent them from the parts store. New boxes come centered, so install the box first, then put the pitman arm on, matching it to the linkage.

Hello, Sir is your 1997 Ford Expedition a 4X4? It sounds like the drag line and it's ball joints.
There is a bent heavy steel arm at the end of steering box. On the end of this pitman arm is the drag link and the drag link is hook to each front hub with a ball joint on each end and the pitman arm. This way when the steering wheel is turning both wheels in the front will follow each other.
If the ball joint are wore out on the drag link this will cause the front wheels to wobble.

Need to get the Ford Exp off the ground where the front wheels are free of a load. Now, just grab one of the front wheels and move it back and forth. There a good possiblity it rattle like marble in a car.
Also, check the upper and lower control arms that attached to each front hub. There are hugh ball joint in each control arm, upper and lower on each of the Ford Exp. Two per side four all together.
I hope this help you. GB...stewbison

Both front tires are not strait up and down when looking at front view, and is eating tires like crazy, I was told i need a new pitman arm and tie rod ends, and my question on this is there a way that i...

No, if the pitman arm and tie rods are worn bad enough to cause the tires to be this much out of alignment, then this car is dangerous to even drive. If one of those parts comes loose you will loose any steering control and have an accident. You need to park this car until you have enough money to have it repaired.

In order to remove the P/S Gear Pitman Shaft Lower Seal where the Pitman arm is attached on a 1995 chevy G10 van , can the seal be removed from the outside by just removing the Pitman arm or does the gear...

Once you have the arm removed (use a puller made for that) You need to remove the c clip retainer. Many times you can loosely install the arm, put it back on the ground and with a catch pan under it, just quickly turn the wheel and pressure will drive the seals out. If that does not work, you can use long self tapping screws and put one into each side of the seal and pull it free. Most i've seen always have two seals separated by a steel flat washer. To re-install, you need to carefully drive the seal back in using a piece of pipe or anything that fits and does not damage it. I have special tools I made long ago to do that but the trick is to be careful not to get the seal too far in on any one side and to not damage it in any way. Likely someone makes an install tool. Make note of the order of the seals as you remove them and make a reference mark on the arm and shaft so you can get back together the same way it was.

Hello im trying to change my steering box and im having troubles getting the pitman arm off the steering box shaft need advice

You need a tool called a pitman arm puller. Most large parts stores either loan or rent them out. After tightening the ram, it often helps to give a sharp blow with a large hammer to the ram end to break the arm free while under tension. If the tool isn't yours though don't get too crazy with that as if you break it it's yours!!!
Your other option is to remove the box with the arm still on and have a shop break it free for you.
good luck

Stuck pitman arm on a 95 GMC 1500 4x4

This is how I do it. I spray alot of PB Blaster all over the connection and take a large hammer and hit the side of the pitman arm and keep spraying and hitting. It'll come loose and fall off. You have to break up the rust "welding" it together.
