What could be causing the intermittent surging only when I drive at slower speeds?

  • Yasoda Apr 28, 2013

great ideas everyone! i'm taking it in for a diagnostic tomorrow. i notice that this problem only came up just after i had an oil change and i will point that out; as well as perhaps the gas filter, etc. thanks all!

REMEDY! I told the mechanic that this problem only began after they changed my oil, so I thought either the fuel gage has a problem or a sensor was loose. Well, sure enough. when they checked my ail filter a wire was not tight. Problem solved and you bet they didn't charge me. I'm very grateful! Thanks for this valuable resource especially for me an older BMW 750 owner!

SOURCE: intermittant check engine light

The only way to find out what the problem is is by doing a scan of the car computer module using an OBD code reader.
The codes returned will tell you the cause of the problem.

Not an intrigue, sorry. run over anything lately? A pinched cooler line could cause this. Or maybe just an old, gummy transmission.

SOURCE: P0420 code

This means that the secondary O2 sensor detects that the catalytic converter isn't working as efficiently as it should.
This engine code can be triggered by any one of the following:

1.) The catalyst in the catalytic converter is cracked, clogged, or otherwise damaged.
2.) The secondary O2 sensor is malfunctioning.
3.) There is an exhaust leak.
4.) The computer unit is faulty.

The check engine light should be on and when it is the engine controls are in Limp mode. That means the computer is using a pre-set list of settings to try to keep the engine running long enough to get the car to a shop.
You need to get the problem with the MAP sensor fixed and get the light turned off.

Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.
