Red battery on dash

The red battery icon lights up if your charging system is NOT generating enough voltage. Everything that using electric current on the vehicle runs off of the battery power, which is supplied by the alternator/regulator. If your alternator is not working your battery will eventually drain and car will die (headlights will kill it fast). First thing I would check would be if the alternator belt broke. If so ,replace it. If not, your alternator may have quit and needs replacing. Alternator is like 2 or 4 bolts to take it off (easy stuff). Once you get the electrical system working again, be sure to let you battery get a full trickle charge, as not to cause you problems later.

Power steering went out last nite and battery light came on serpoentine belt is loose

You'll need to replace the belt tensioner as it is probably weak and not keeping the correct tension on the belt.

If the timing belt snapped ??,why would it kill the battery too instantly, sorry this problems a major headache

well it sounds like you have a bunch of issues here. i should have asked before what engine this has. if it's a 6 cylinder it does not have a timing belt and you probably have a siezed alternater or a starter that is stuck engaged. let us know what engine you have.

Battery light stays on until I press the gas

Known issue to occur occasionally on VW/Audi. What is occurring is that the alternator is not spinning out fast enough to start charging, so the light is on. Once you rev the engine, the alternator starts to charge and remains charging till its shut off and restarted. It can be related to too low of an idle (not adjustable, unless you have a dirty throttle plate or air leak), the alternator itself (aftermarket or a bad rebuild) or an incorrect alternator pulley installed (too large).

Wont start

Either your belt broke to your alternator, or your alternator went out.

Start up problem

If the belts are making noise, the alternator may NOT be spinning fast enough to produce sufficient voltage to charge ther battery, because the belts are slipping, and slipping = noises.
Tighten the belts.

Regarding the starter: Replace it, or get it overhauled at a starter repair service. You have bad starter contacts
