Question about 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
When I replace the fuse and turn on the car to check the instrument panel, I start smelling a burning metal smell. The only other way I can explain the smell is that it's very similar to the acidic-type smell of hot brakes. After I smell that, the instrument cluster panel dies along with everything else on that fuse. I've gone through 3 fuses already. This just started out of no-where. Any suggestions/ideas? Thanks in advance.
Some electrical short stay there, I suggest to check each electrical circuit that is connected to this fuse; check description or legend in the fuse label. With other details, we could send some electrical diagrams.

This is just a routine service reminder, it can be reset by pushing the step button until you see 0 miles to service displayed, then just hold down the reset button.

A poor connection at the self docking connections of the cluster. Remove the trim across the top of the intrument panel. Remove the screws at the top of the cluster trim and remove the trim. Remove the cluster screws and cluster. Apply dielectric grease to the self docking connectors of the cluster and reinstall. This should take care of it.

feed wire for the lights may have failed or the circuit on the board may have gone. if you remove the cluster you can put a supply to the bulb circuit (carefully) and check if it is the circuit. If it's ok you can run a new feed to the cluster from your lights. Job done.
