Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

1 Answer

I have a 2002 montero sport 2wd v6 automatic, it jerks when I go up hills and excelerate down the highway, it also idles a little rough. The service engine light was going on and off and now its just on all the time. could it be the o@ sensor, fuel pump or? I checked and cleaned the mass air filter and iits spotless any ideas?

If its still getting the same gas mileage etc does that mean the fuel pressure is ok? Or how do you check the fuel pressure?

  • montehammons Apr 26, 2013

With a fuel pressure gauge hooked into the fuel rail at the test port. Correct pressure is critical for the injectors to inject the right amount of fuel for smooth driving-smooth running engine-gas mileage may not correlate well with fuel pressure.

Hi monte, I just checked the codes and I have a P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected, so basically I need a tune up LOL!?? I have never tuned it up since I've owned it, it now needs a new air filter etc, all I've ever done was change oil etc etc, I think the winter road chemicals up here in seattle from the winter really got everything dirty. Your thoughts?

  • montehammons Apr 28, 2013

A cylinder mis-fire could be ignition (a bad spark plug, plug wire or faulty coil-check your spark on that number one.) or it could be gas-related ( a poor performing injector-maybe clogged? or not pulsing?), or it could be an internal mechanical condition at cylinder one (maybe a stuck valve, burned valve, a head gasket leak- to check for this, you need to have a compression test done to see how that cylinder matches up compression with the other cylinders-if compression is good in that cylinder, like the others, then it is not a mechanical problem. Your safe there. Low compression in cylinder one means the head will have to be removed for repairs. Hope it's not that- I just found a non-working, almost new spark plug with no visible sign of damage, in my Sentra, causing no fire in one of my cylinders, so you should try a different spark plug even if it looks good. From mis-firing, the spark plug will have a sooty black coating on it. If it also appears wet, that may mean your cylinder is getting gas from the injector. A good firing cylinder, in tune, will have plugs that are dry and with a brownish grey or tan color around the bottom, and mostly free of any black soot deposits, or oil fouling.

Have a scan done at autozone or O'reilleys to get the diagnostic trouble codes read, and go from there. Anytime the light comes on when running, the computer has set a trouble code. It will direct you to the problem.
Have the fuel pressure tested to see if it is the fuel pump. If fuel pressure is correct, it may be your catalytic converter. But get the codes first-they should point you in the right direction.

SOURCE: Mitsu Montero Sport '02 engine stalls but not when air cond is on.

hi there. the reason that the engine idles good when the air-con is engaged is that ussually all vehicles nowadays have a vacumm advance mechanism. this is triggered mainly by a electric solenoid valve which is also attached parallel to the source supplying power to compressor. a small vacumm hose with a diameter like a common pencil or ballpen case. its made of rubber and it runs from the alternator vacumm pump then to the solenoid valve and to the vacumm advancer unit attached to the injection pump throttle. this system raises the idle a tad higher.

if your montero runs completely normal and you experience no other problems with your engine except for your present problem, then the solution is just raising the idle a little higher. if your montero is equiped with a RPM guage on the dash, try adjusting the idle to around 800 rpms. it would be healthier for your car if the idle raises a bit when you engage the air-con because this would compensate for the added load on your engine.

hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2002 Montero Sport 4X2 jerks during and after

Check the 'U' joints in the drive line. Check the engine/transmission mounts for damage or looseness. The real enigma is trying to determine if this is an engine or a chassis problem. If the check engine light is on, doing a scan of the computer should show engine problems. If no light, concentrate on anything in the chassis for periodic binding. Good luck!

You need 9.8 quarts of Dexron III or later, for a dry fill. A wet service fill will be less, about 6-7 quarts. Autozone or any other auto spares outlet will have it.

I found my engine Mitsubishi pajero fieldmaster Model 2002 with rough idle when I started this morning. It took sometime before running well

unsure if this is petrol or diesel model. check basics first, air filter not clogged, sparkplugs not sooted and gaps burnt wide. if it is a GDI V6 model, thay have common fault with dirty throttle body(TB) and air mass unit, causes rough idle and gets worse over weeks until it doesnt improve.this can be easily fixed by cleaning with solvents available for air flow sensors and tb's. if engine has plastic cover, remove this to access TB

I have a 98 Montero Sport and to adjust the idle all I needed was a phillips screw driver. Check owners manuel for Idle speed and remember to have lights off when adjusting. Also it showed the idle range posted on the hood underneath.
