Question about 1991 Geo Prizm

1 Answer

Loose clutch

As I was driving the clutch got looser every time I pushed it in. Then the gears would'nt shift. I got it home and a friend came by and said it needed gear oil. It was empty so he put brake fluid in it. I got it going ok then but now when I try to drive it, its like the clutch isn't in.

I have bled the clutch & nothing has changed. The fluid in the cylinder looked really dirty so I sucked out the old, filled it w/new & bled it again. All of the air is out of the line but nothing has changed. I can start the car but it will take off just like the clutch isn't engaged.

If It Was Empty Did You Bleed The System Like You Do Brakes? If That Dont Work You Might Need A Master Or Slave Cylinder But First Check To See If You Still Have Fluid In It Then Bleed It

Testimonial: "To Matt Ron and Ronald. Thanks for the tips. I.'m sure it wasn't bled. I am an elderly woman but thanks to my Dad l know quite a bit about cars. I wasn't at the car when the fluid was put in or I wouldn't have allowed it. I am a small woman but I know with a book I can do it myself. Thanks for your answers. I needed confirmation and a starting point. My battery is going dead."

SOURCE: 95 Geo Tracker - Automatic. Starts ok, but when

It needs a fluid change, and filter,in the transmission, also, add a additive called LUBEGUARD from napa auto parts, when you ask for the additive,be sure to get the one for gm,this additive keeps the valve body slick, and moving, this is the problem, your filter, and ,or,the fluid is dirty, and causing hydraulic problems, and valves to stick in the valve body in the transmission.

SOURCE: 2000 Chevy Metro New Clutch and now can't shift into 1st Gear

With ALL due respect, I speak from a 30 year Career of AUTO & Heavy Truck Experence of Fleet Management and Personal Customer Auto Care, and by NO means do I mean any Disrespect to you here.
As Long as is Does Not grind while UP SHIFTING you R fine , DOWNSHIFTING into 1st Gear BEFORE 20 mph is a Disaster Waiting to Happen EXAMPLE> Just BECAUSE a car CAN run at 120mph does not Mean One SHOULD do it. If it downshifted to 1st gear before 20 mph with OTHER Clutch that was due to WEAR, there MAY be a bit of AIR in the Release bearing or Slave cylinder, That needs to be BLED OUT, DOWNSHIFTING IS NOT A recommended Practice Unless its an EMERGENCY STOP condition, as It Causes Premature Wear on Clutch Disc. I Know this MAY seem UNTRUE as you may have done it for years But IN FACT A Clutch is MADE to Simply Get From LOWER GEAR TO HIGHER GEAR, but if you Downshift ALL of the time you WILL Subject the Clutch to TWICE the WEAR you Should THUS WEARING it OUT TWICE AS FAST $ thats $$$$. A good number of shops wont Advise you this Far as it Would REDUCE THERE Profit. I Hope I Have shed some Light on this delima, And Think of the MONEY you Can SAVE on TWICE the Longevity with 1 Clutch Job. Again I hope this Helps you, And If you FEEL that I Deserve A GOOD RATING Please do so ,as Most folks get there Answers and GO without Rating US LoL Thank You !

The accelator cable is "Y" shaped. one side goes to the carb and the other to the tranmission. If you have the carb.side too tight it will give you the problem that you are having.

SOURCE: how do i fix the overdrive ligh flashing on my

The overdrive light is flashing because there is a diagnostic code stored in the Transmission control mudule. You will need to have the codes pulled to know where the problem is.The 2nd gear only condition is not a symptom, it is limp mode caused by the code being stored. There are about 30 different problems that can cause limp mode,so there is no way to guess. There is a procedure to pull codes that I can give you if you want to do it yourself.Just let me know,Thanks!

The stiff clutch may just be the nature of the car. Ask your friend if they know of any problems with the clutch. If it doesn't make any odd noises, I think it would be safe. If the clutch is cable controlled, rather than a hydraulic clutch. it may need adjusting. It won't affect the stiffness, but it may make shifting a little smoother.

Kia sephia will start but when lights turned on door locks and starter motor engage?

you have wires reversed at the fuse block under hood, matbe had to replace sone of the maxi fuse's that bolt in?? the clutch is probable bad there is a test motor running emergency brake on then push clutch pedal in and try 1st gear and keep pedal down during this, go 1st gear the to reverse if wont go smoothly or grinds then most likly clutch throwout bearing is bad, maybe clutch cable is streched or not adjusted properly if it is mechanical clutch, depends on year and engine size

Just from what you described, I feel like the problem is a blown head gasket. Just hear me out, because I can't see the car and I may be off base. Normally, I would say it's impossible to say what it is without a thorough checkout of the actual car.
One way to tell is to check for water in the oil [cloudy] This will indicate a blown gasket. one of the symptoms is [seems to run until it's under load.]Also this can happen during an 'overheating' incident like the one you have described. This is why I suggest this is likely the problem. Checking the oil is a fast way to tell it is, lack of water in the oil isn't always a sign or it not, but the presence of water in the oil is a sign of a bad gasket.

Was shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear when shift lever got loose, chould not shift into any gear, seems like it is stuck in 1st now.Feels like I still have clutch, could it be something in the linkage

Sounds like you broke your linkage. It's not as bad as it sounds. It's a cable, or a small plastic part. It will be expensive to have a shop do it. Try to get help from a friend.

I hope its your release bearing, but I had this same issue with my Audi and it turned out to be I need a new transmission, the gears are not catching it sounds like. your synchros may also be off. Does it do this in every gear, and once it does move, does the clutch slip?

It sounds like the bearings inside the transfer case are going out, with pressure on it while accelerating its fine, then when you push in the clutch the transfer case gets slack allowing the internal parts to move, causing the lights to flash as gears move causing the shift motor to move. I would start looking for a replacement transfer case.

Sounds like you are having a clutch problem. The sudden looseness in the clutch pedal indicates a problem with either the hydralic system, (slave or master or line) leaking or clutch pressure plate going out. Check your clutch fluid resevoir first, if low look for a leak under the vehicle, have a friend push the clutch and get underneath to find leak.
