I have the same situation w/ my 2000 740il . On the top of the reservoir their is a bleading screw. Its black plastic with a ( + ) shaped inset. That is the bleading spot. You may have a different resiviour(different year????) Im not sure? It is a very sesitive moter and this is a common problem with them. Dont drive untill its fixed. If you hit the red you will crack a head or two! If its in good shape have it towed to a repair shop.(they have a special tool to bleed them) They tend to trap air even when blead normaly. Its all a big scam , what car has a 150$ thermostat? They got you by the balls, the only safe way is to bring it to a dealership or someone who is specialized on BMW. So if your car is worth anything, have it done right and sadly most mechanics cant.(they dont have t Let alone you or me.

SOURCE: 2001 BMW 740iL is sputtering when I accelarate and shaky when idl

A tune-up and throttle body clean-up is a good idea, but mind you on those cars, the valve covers usually leak into the spark plugs and coils, causing the car to misfire. If you are replacing the plugs and find them soaked in oil; replace your valve cover gaskets or you will be back to the same problem soon after the oil soaks the new plugs back up again.

My 97 bmw i put water in it and didnt bleed it now the heater is blowing out cold air can someone please help me?

Did it blow hot air before you put water in it? Why did you put water in it? It's supposed to use a 50/50 coolant mixture.

Did you overheat the motor and it quit?

98 740il bmw water leaking from back of engine and i can't see where its coming from

probably a hose, take it to a mechanic and ask if you can get it pressure tested. They will put a cap on your radiator and pump air through it and the water with run through and leak where there is a problem

2007 bmw 525xi check engine light is one because the thermostat is not opening and closing properly

It could be from either one but I would wager air is trapped in the system. Bleed the system and see how it does. If it continues to have the same problem then you can look into the thermostat.

Window wipers dont work on my 97 740il bmw

First pull and inspect fuses. If good I suspect the wiper switch is bad or ground is loose. Ground wires are identified as brown wires in bindles bolted to firewall, fenderwell, etc.. make sure they're not corroded. Bimmers are pretty tough and I really suspect a fuse.

I am trying to put the dash cluster from the 9-97 in to the 11-97 bmw 740il but the wiring is different

If the wiring is different i would suggest that you do not use it.Considering the wiring is not the same tells me they will not interchange.U need to find a unit that has the same build date.Call your local salvage yard and they will tell you what will interchange.

I need to change the oil on my 94 BMW 740IL. How do I do this? Do I need special tools?

Changing oil in the BMW 740iL is no different than other cars. If you are not comfortable with this find a trusted German Automotive mechanic to do it for you.
You will need a large socket to remove the oil filter housing cover. The BMW tool is expensive. You can use large channel lock pliers with a smooth jaw or place a small strip of cardboard (like cereal box) over the teeth on regular pliers so you don't damage the cover.

HOW DO YOU PURGE OR RELEASE AIR ONCE YOU REPLACE RADIATOR, WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT?

the thermostat (on bmw replacement parts) have an arrow that has to be installed facing upward.if this was done correctly,to bleed the system usually there is a bleeder screw on or near the expansion tank(where you fill the coolant) and possibly on the thermostat housing. i would recommend opening both bleeders and keep filling the system with coolant closing the lower bleeder first and then allow the rest of the air purge from the other bleeder screw.make sure the coolant stays full and be patient you can't wait TOO long.

My retired uncle has a 97 cadillac deville sts that runs well but after a short distance or time idling begins to overheat. He has replaced the water pump, thermostat and had the radiator and head gasket checked. Unfortunately he lives in a rural area and there is no local cadillac dealership for diagnostic repairs.

I have a 97 bmw 316i, we have changed the water pump, checked heads and changed radiator, bleed it at a 40degree angle filled it with coolant and it is still overheating after a ten minute drive?

You actually need the thermostat in to pressurize your cooling system or the coolant won't cyle through the radiator, it'll just cycle around the engine. Most people think without the thermostat in the coolant will just pump freely through the engine and radiator, but it doesn't.

Chuck in a new thermostat, purge the air out of the system and see if it overheats then. I gaurentee it won't, if it does then you've got head problems (but they should already be obvious by now).
