Sounds as if you have not serviced it with enough fluid. I am a hydraulic specialist and if you give me a little more info...I can help. Those trannys hold more fluid than you think. If you do not service them properly, you WILL have shifting problems and it will look like you are using up fluid. The torque converter is a pig for much fluid was drained out?

And, I understand you DID NOT take anything else off but the filter correct?

Do me a favor and take a look at this pic.....

The best thing to do is fill it to the proper level....start the vehicle and have a piece of cardboard underneath the vehicle. Try to pinpoint the best that you can, WHERE the leak may be coming from.

Did it leak prior to the filter change?

Well, if it appears that the lower dipstick tube IS leaking, it could just be that the seal is leaking. This can be a pain to fix. It either has to be resealed with a rubber oring or sealed with a sealant. Either way, the tube would have to be removed. Now, if you over tightened the bolts on the pan, it could be leaking from there....but you didn't state that you saw fluid on or around the pan.

If it is possible for you to even REMOTELY clean around the lower dipstick so, then with a good flashlight, have someone shift gears with the vehicle running and concentrate on that lower dipstick area.

My 1999 chevy blazer wont shift out of low

My husband had the same problem with his 1988 S10 Blazer. We drained the tranny, cleaned out the pan and put in a new filter etc. Filled with new fluid and all problems solved. Shifts better now then before the tranny service.

I have a 2003 2-wheel drive 2500HD silverado, i accidentally drained the tranny fluid out except for what was left in the pan instead of the oil, realized my mistake shortly after it would rev up before...

Start it up to warm it up, check tranny fluid in park or neutral, if low, put more in. Hope it is junk though. If not low, you never know. I'd runit till it breaks and keep putting in fluid if needed.

Shifts hard at first (when tranny is cold) then seems to shift fine. Checked tranny fluid level and it was low by a few quarts. Could this have been the problem or am I in danger?

this may have been problem[low on fluid] may be time to change that trannny fluid and filter. if you choose to do this , i recommend that you add lucas tranny treatment to the fluid change also w/new tranny filter. this frees up any sticky valves in your tranny. allows smooth shifting, and works well wlth any fluid for fords/chevy's or jeeps. the lucas will eliminate the hard shifting, been there done that issue. also the hard down shifting you did'nt mention. although you may have not noticed. add the lucas and your hard shifting issues should be gone. thank you for choosing

Transmission still shifts erractically

well if you have a lot of millage it could only be the gearpump in the transy thats finished, unfotuntly cant really change -it without rebuilding the all transy
other than that you still can drive-it but try letting the gear go on by it self ,you could damage your van by doing that !! you mignt not have choice but if you do ...try not doing-it!

1999 Sable quits shifting when it gets hot

How do you know it's getting hot ? What is the Temp gauge showing ? Do the cooling fans work ? Have it checked for trouble codes an scan data checked .
It was however the correct thing to do in changing the fluid and filter - that's the first suspect. No no it wasn't , the correct thing would be to take it to a qualified repair shop . Hooking up a professional type scan tool an viewing data , inputs to transmission control module , ECM/PCM - engine computer etc. The control module controls shift solenoids -which shift the transmission . You could have 1-2 shift solenoid shorting when getting hot . View scan data is the only way to see this problem .

Wont shift

check to make sure you did not knock off any vacuum lines and also make sure the transmission fluid is not low and if it smells cooked replace the fluid and the filter because the screen in the filter could be plugged and it is not getting fluid to the torque converter but check the fluid first
