Hi, seems Im having problems with the top of my 03 new beetle convertible. I dont know if Im not using the mechanism correctly or what, but sometimes, when I try to put the top up or down, the mehanism makes a sound likes its forcing itself or like its not "grinding" right and the top wont go either up or down. Then, after trying a few times it´ll work. Is this normal?? Hope its not too serious. Thanks

My mother is having the same problem with her 2005 vw beetle too ... i looked in the fuse box, and i think i found the fuse that has blown ... i dont know about yours .. but hers would not even attempt to put the top down at all ... so i figured it had to be a blown fuse... ill be replacing it tomorrow if it is that ill let you know .. i cant remember the exact spot off hand, but i know it was a 25 amp yellowish fuse
Im actually going through the process of fixing this problem with my car. the P2181 is a performance cooling error, usually brought up by thermostat, radiator issues, or ECT sensor. You should narrow it down and check both radiator and thermostat to prevent later issues. If all is well go to your local autozone, pep boys, checkers..etc. and have them erase the DTC error. If you are looking for a more long term solution you can purchase many different software such as VAG-COM or any other software used to run test on vehicals. Be sure you know what you are doing though because messing with your cars computer can have long term effects that can be pricey.
Try resetting the pinch protection program. You do this by inserting the key into the drivers side door, turning to the right and holding untill the windows are fully raised. Then you turn to the left and hold untill the windows are fully lowered. This is supposed to reset the program.
