Move all of your plug wires forward clockwise one hole and try again.

What are the ignition timing marks for a 1996 Chevy camaro 5.7

Your vehicle has an electronic advancement inside the distributor. To properly set the ignition timing there is a plug that has to be separated. On the late 80s and early 90s it was on the firewall towards the passengers side. Brown or dark tan wire with a similar color plug. Follow the wiring harness from the distributor you can't miss it. If you leave this plug hooked up the engine will constantly try to adjust the timing and you will never get it set right. Once you get it set to 0° shut it off and hook the plug back up. The ecm will constantly adjust the timing sometimes up to 20° or more so that's y it looks off.

When i disconnect the tan/black wire to set timing engine will not hold steady idle. is this normal?

NO it should just stop the spark advance .Look at the cam and crank pisition sensors
More then likely the crank pisition sensor

What degree should the 65 xp falcon 200 super pursuit motor ignition be set at

the degrees advance will be 10 degrees on the crank pulley. Loosen the distributor clamp so that you can turn the distributor . Set the points to the point gap. Place the pulley timing on 10 degrees . Turn the distributor in the direction of rotation until the points are closed . Turn on the ignition and advance ( turn against direction of rotation) the distributor until you hear a click. If you have the coil lead out of the coil when you hear the click you will get a spark from the HT lead. Lock up the distributor clamp at this point and you will be spot on timing. On most engines the recommended advance setting can vary a little so you may be able to advance it just a bit to make it run better . Use a light to check for how far advanced you are. A max of 12 degrees will be allowable.

What should my timing be on a 1997 olds bravada at idle and at max advance

There are no specifications for what you are asking for. Timing is checked by using a scan tool and reading the camshaft offset at idle. It should be 0 +/- 2 degrees. This is NOT adjustable. This is only for reference to see if there is excessive play in the timing chain or the distributor shaft.
Here is what the service manual states about ignition timing:

"NOTE : The Distributor is located in a fixed, non-adjustable position. No attempt should be made to adjust the engine base timing by rotating the distributor. Attempting to do so may result in engine cross-fire and mis-fire conditions. Timing is not adjustable."

Awesome little car! I'm not sure where they want the timing at idle but if you have an advance style timing light, bring the engine up to 3500 rpm and twist the distributor so that you see 40 degress btdc. and you'll be good to go. I'll dig up the idle specs later if you like and post them.

I do my own auto care and have had conflicting information on these specs, recently purchased a olds 98 with a 455engine and single point distributor, point gap was at 19 the timing was at 10 and the plug...

I would start by doing a compression test. If you have a low cylinder than no adjustments will improve it. Also the plug gap and the timing will not cause misfire. The point gap would make a difference, but it sounds like you have other issues, so start with a compression test. Hope this helps. Good luck :O)

1996 gmc jimmy wont start seems like advanced timing issue backfiring out throttlebody, replaced timing pick up, distribitor cap, crank sensor, ICM, when ignition conrol module replace the engine ran fine...

You said the problem happened right after the engine was replaced correct? If so bring number cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire. It's possible the distributor was installed 180 degrees out.

Timing on a 1990 Wrangler with a 4.2 liter

4.2L 6-Cylinder

1. Set parking brake. Shift automatic transmission to Park or manual transmission to Neutral. With A/C off, start engine and attain normal operating temperature.

2. With ignition OFF, connect an ignition timing light and a calibrated, expanded-scale tachometer.

3. Disconnect 4 " and 10 " Hg (CEC System) vacuum switch assembly wire connector (located at top of valve cover). Disconnect and plug distributor vacuum advance hose.

4. Start engine, increase engine speed to 1600 RPM and check ignition timing. Adjust timing to specification listed on Emission Control Information label (if necessary). Tighten distributor hold-down clamp and recheck ignition timing.

5. Turn engine off and remove timing light and tachometer. Connect No. 1 spark plug lead, if disconnected. Unplug and connect distributor vacuum advance hose. Connect vacuum switch assembly wire connector.

NOTE: If timing light has an adjustable advance control feature, turn control to OFF position.

Timing is set per the emissions tag under hood.

Engine sluggish

By all means tweak the distributor and adjust the idle to get your vacuum up to where it should be. At the same time have you checked the timing with a timing lite? If you have and it is bang on you may want to consider taking a look at your timing chain in the near future as it may be stretched a little. But before you do that, check your compression. hope that this helps and that you take the time to rate this information.
