Question about 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

2 Answers

Engine will not stay at a consistant speed while driving.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT with the 2.7 V6 and a 5-speed. I have installed a short ram intake and a catback exhaust. While trying to drive at a consistent speed the engine will cut out completely. If I give it gas it will lurch back to life until it starts to even out. It will do it in any gear at any steady speed. It accelerates just fine until I get to my desired speed. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Mike

Yes, it is still connected. I unhooked it to try to track down the problem and the check engine light came on. With it plugged back in, the light went out and the problem persisted.

OK. This may sound like a no-brainer, but I've seen it done before... so I have to ask...

When you un-installed the factory air-box and all of the associated plastic intake parts leading up to the throttle body, did you happen to remove (AND RE-INSTALL) the MAF that's in-line with the stock air-intake (AND PLUG IT BACK IN)?

Try cleaning the MAF. If that doesn't work start checking for vacuum leaks or for damaged o2 sensors. You may also want to disconnect the battery for a bit to force the ECU to 0 out the fuel trims and let it re-learn what adjustments it needs to make with the new intake and exhaust.

My odometer has been at the same mileage after a full day of driving.

The nylon gear that drives the speedometer cable has probably failed. This gear is mounted on the transmission.

Vacuum diagram for a 2004 tiburon

There is only 4 vacuum lines on that engine

1- brake booster line

2- purge line to purge solenoid (top center of throttle body)

3- PCV hose. run straight from PCV to side of intake at base of throttle body

4- fuel pressure regulator line (short small diameter hose runs from #6 intake runner to fuel pressure regulator

5- tube that connects front cam cover to rear cam cover to improve vapor venting

My 2004 tiburon has recently began lurching between 20 and 25 mph. what are possibilities of what is wrong?

It could be an engine problem; cylinder misfires, air, fuel, timing control, etc. or it could be a transmission problem; hunting for gears, low control pressure, speed sensor problems, etc. The only way to find out is to drive the vehicle, scan the onboard computer network for fault codes, check the live computer data, etc...

All systems? or just a few? You can go to http://www.hmaservice.com/ and register your vehicle (by VIN). Afterward, you'll have access to the ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual) and Shop Manuals as well as Service bulletins.
