Stabilizer links the stabilizing rod is disconnected somehow. noticed the problem when i got a flat tire. how do i fix it myself instead of a mechanic doing the labor

SOURCE: far to much steering wheel play befor tire reaction

Loosen nut on top of steering gear box. Tighten adjustment bolt 1/4 turn at a time then tighten nut. Drive and see if it hold together better. Repeat until you can't tighten adjustment bolt any more. If it's still iffy, replace your steering gear box.

I feel unstable going at moderate speed around a corner. it doesnt feel like it hugs the road. is this because it is base GXE model?


in stability in corners can be from several reasons
The first is the quality of tires in use as all stability feelings are generated by the tire profile, tire pressure and side wall profile and the quality of the tire (for example a 195 -75 r15 tire will feel loose compared to a 195-25r15 tire which has small side wall dimension and so sits better in the corners )
Next is the condition of the shock absorber, worn out , old or not of good quality manufacturer ( shock absorbers are design to take the rebound out of springs and suspension movement and if they are of inferior quality or worn out , instead of allowing the body to roll slowly , it feels like it will fall over )
Next is the use of a stabilizer bar front and rear as this is what keeps the car feeling level on the road when cornering ( if the stabilizer bar is too thin in section it torques to easily and the movement of the center of gravity is not properly controlled and so the body leans too much instead of sitting flat)
Suspension parts , ball joints , struts , steering rod ends , bad rubbers all add to a bad feeling
another reason could be a wheel alignment or loose wheel bearings ( steering tends to dart and feel out of control when cornering)
Many cars are designed with "soft" suspension to enhance the driving experience but this type of suspension will give the feeling of uncertainty when cornering ( like being on a water filled mattress)
To get a cost of the suspension up grade you first have to know what is the reason for the bad feeling
I would suggest a full safety inspection by an accredited specialist suspension shop ( Pedders or the like ) and then a quote on the modifications that will improve drivability and cornering
a job done professionally will be a safe and legal job

How to Replace a Stabilizer Link in a Toyota Tundra car?


1) First of all make sure the vehicle is completely cool. Then disconnect the battery ground wire.
2) Then place the vehicle on a rack or raise the front of the vehicle on supports.
3) Then remove the front wheels and tires.
4) The Loosen the nuts that connect the stabilizer bar links to the lower control arm.
5) Then remove the nuts and disconnect the links from the lower control arm.Stabilize the link with the help of the wrench. Remove the nut and remove the retainers, cushions and link. Pull the bolts then remove the stabilizer bar along with the brackets and cushions.
6) Then put the new stabilizer in position. Install the two cushions and the two brackets. Tighten the bolts to 19 to 22 foot pounds. Then steady the stabilizer bar link with a wrench. Put the link on the lower control arm. Install a new nut. Torque the nut to 10 to 14 foot pounds.
7) Put the front wheels and tires back on the vehicle. Lower the vehicle.
8) Then Road test the vehicle to assure proper handling.

Looking for front suspension torque specs for tie rod. Or is a stabilizer shaft link the same thing as a tie rod


The tie rod connects the two front steering pieces together so that both tires point in the same direction at the same time.
The stabilizer shaft link is part of the suspension that helps keep the vehicle lever when you're going around corners.
Check with your local GM dealer or auto parts supply for torque specs.

I have replaced the stabilizer links on my 2008 Pontiac G6 base model and I cant find the torque specs for the nuts.

Stabilizer Links

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the stabilizer shaft.
  4. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the strut assembly and remove from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Connect the stabilizer link to the strut assembly.
  2. Tighten the stabilizer link nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  3. Connect the stabilizer link to the stabilizer shaft.
  4. Tighten the stabilizer link nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  5. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

My rack and pion is leaking , how do i replace


To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section. NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly (clock spring) to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the assembly.
  2. Lock the steering column by installing the J42640 into the underside of the steering column.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tires and wheels.
  5. Remove the power steering gear heat shield.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following: CAUTION
    Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.
    • Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt and coupling from gear
    • Pressure and return pipes from the gear
    • Electrical connector, if equipped
      Stabilizer shaft links at lower control arms
    • Remove the left stabilizer shaft insulator.
    • Rotate the stabilizer shaft to access steering gear bolts.
    • The outer tie rod retaining nuts.
    • Using J24319-B separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
    • Rack and pinion attaching bolts
    • Rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening.
  7. Transfer the outer tie rods if replacing the power steering gear.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening and tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    • Electrical connector, if equipped
      Pressure and return lines to the steering gear and tighten the fittings to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    • Heat shield and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. Lbs. (10 N)
    • Install the left stabilizer shaft insulator.
  2. Install stabilizer shaft Links to lower control arms
  3. Intermediate shaft to the steering gear and tighten the pinch bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
  4. Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
  5. Install the outer tie rods retaining nuts. torque the nuts to 22ft.lbs(30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees.
  6. Install the tires and wheels.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Remove the steering column anti rotation pin from the steering column.
  9. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  10. Adjust the front toe.

Lock the steering column by installing the Steering Column Anti Rotation Pin tool J 42640 into the underside of the steering column--Aurora

Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear Heat Shield Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • The stabilizer shaft links.
    • Rotate the stabilizer shaft downward.
    • The electrical harness clip.
    • Power steering gear heat shield mounting bolts.
    • The heat shield.
To Install:
  1. Install the power steering gear heat shield.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • The mounting bolts And torque to 89in.lbs.(10 Nm)
    • The electrical harness clip.
    • Rotate the stabilizer shaft into position.
    • The stabilizer shaft links.
  3. Lower the vehicle.

How to replace tie rods and bushings in a 1997 dodge caravan


I recommend you get a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for most auto parts stores ($20-$30). But to save you some money:
Tie Rods:
1. Loosen the lug nuts.
2. Raise front of vehicle.
3, Support it with jack stands.
4. Chock/Block the rear tires.
5. Set the parking brake.
6. Remove the front tire.
7. Mark the nut shaped end of the tie rod and the jam nut with a straight line on top.
8. Using two wrenches - one on the tie rod (nut shaped) end and the other on the jam nut,..loosen SLIGHTLY the jam nut (clockwise turn). While loosening the jam nut - make sure you count the number of turns 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 etc...
9. Using 11/32 Socket remove the tie-rod end to steering knuckle nut.
10. Use a tie rod end separator (fork) or ball joint separator (jaws) and separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
11. Before turning the tire rod off the steering arm: Count the number of turns coming off the arm using the mark you put on the tie rod nut shaped end.
Notice on the final turn off the arm what the mark position is. This wil be the position you start when screwing the new tie rod on.
12. Place the jam nut back just short of it's original position.
13. Screw the new tie rod back starting with that start position and with the same number of turns.
14. Connect the tie rod and steering knuckle.
15. Tighten the tie rod to steering knuckle nut to 40 ft-lbs.
16. The tie rod end and jam nut should then be tightened. They should be close anyway within a 1/8 turn.
17. Install lug nuts.
18. Lower Van.
19. Tighten lug nuts to 100 ft-lbs. Using the everyother nut until all are tightened process.
20. Wheel alignment? Test drive Van and have checked at an alignment shop.

The Stabilizer Bar Bushings:
Steps 1. thru Step 6 above. Remove both tires.
7. Remove bolts (should be 10 of them) attaching the cradle plate to the bottom of the front suspension cradle.
8. Remove the cradle plate.
9. Remove the stablizer bar links from the stabilzer bar. Confused? There is a straight bar coming from the Strut down to the sway (stabilizer) bar (which goes from one side of the Van to the other). Remove this nut.
10. Remove the stabilizer (sway) bar bushing retainers (one on each side) from the front suspension cradle.
11. Be careful this bar is heavy and will fall suddenly and may hit you on the head!!
12. Remove the bar and bushings as a unit (together).
13. Install the new bushings with the slits facing the rear of the Van and the square corners facing the ground.
14. Make sure you clean the areas on the bar where the bushings are positioned.
15. Use lubricant (non-petroleum based, like vegetable oil) to easy re-assembly.
16. Re-assembly is pretty much the reverse.
Hints:
a. Align the stabilizer bar in position using the depressions in the cradle.
b. Do not tighten all-the-way the bushing retainers until later.
c. Tighten stabilizer bar to link stabilzer (sway) bar to 65 ft-lbs.
d. Tighten bushing retainer nuts to 50 ft-lbs.
e. Tighten the cradle plate bolts:
M14 at 123 ft-lbs
M12 at 80 ft-lbs.

Stabilizer Bar: Service and Repair
Front
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Remove the stabilizer shaft link nuts from the stabilizer shaft.
4. Remove the stabilizer shaft insulator clamps from the front crossmember.
5. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the stabilizer shaft, insulator clamps and bolts to the crossmember.
2. Install the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the stabilizer shaft link nuts.
- Tighten the stabilizer shaft link nuts to 72 Nm (53 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the stabilizer shaft insulator clamp bolts.
- Tighten the stabilizer shaft insulator clamp bolts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
6. Lower the vehicle.



Stabilizer Bar: Service and Repair
Rear
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Remove the stabilizer shaft link nuts from the stabilizer shaft.
4. Remove the stabilizer shaft clamps, bolts and nuts retaining the shaft to the crossmember.
5. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the stabilizer shaft insulator clamps to the stabilizer shaft and the crossmember.
- Tighten the stabilizer shaft insulator clamp bolts to 65 Nm (49 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the stabilizer shaft insulator clamp nuts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
- Tighten the stabilizer shaft link nuts to 72 Nm (53 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
5. Lower the vehicle.

How to remove front stabilizer bar in '05 Scion TC


I don't know if you can get the bushings out without changing the bar or not, but changing the bar is a big job for a DIY. I was thinking about it but will probably have a pro do it for me. From the shop manual: 1. PLACE FRONT WHEEL FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 2. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET (See page SR-9) 3. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (See page PS-21) 4. DISCONNECT NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 5. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 6. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER LH 7. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 8. REMOVE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH (a) Remove the 2 nuts and front stabilizer link LH. HINT: Use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud if the ball joint turns together with the nut. 9. Death wobble


My Death Wobble started immediately after I installed a set of Coil Spring Spacers (to lift 1.75 inches) on my stock 2005 Jeep Wrangler X. Turned out, the DW was because while changing the height, I also lowered the CASTER angle in the front end. So, to fix it, I could have purchased a set of eccentric bolts for $50+. Instead I went out and purchased a piece of 1.5 inch flat bar for $10 from OSH. I cut out 4 1.5 inch squares. Then i drilled 7/16 inch holes centerline, but close to one side (in exactly the same place) on all for squares. I then removed the lower control arm bolts, nuts and washers. I installed these square offset washers I made so the front axle would be pushed forward (to increase the Caster angle). The toe setting changed a bit, so I reset them to about 1/8 inch toe in. After driving my Jeep, I noticed there is no more DW. The steering wheel was off center, but after 3 attempts, I have that perfectly centered. I have every intension of having the alignment checked, but not till after I find the new tires I want. If anyone is interested, I can draw out and photograph the cure and send it to you.
