Question about 1985 Chevrolet Caprice

Why wont my 85 caprice get any power all terminals to my battery are good and so is my battery it also has a solid ground. what could be the problem?

Loose connections on the starter. Your whole electrical system is ran by fusible links bolted with the positive battery cable on the starter.

Where is the location of my starter relay ********* fuse on a 2003 Chrysler Sebring sedan


WARNING: CHECK TO ENSURE THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS IN THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED.

RELAY TEST
The starter relay is located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment. Refer to the PDC label for relay identification and location.

Remove the starter relay from the PDC as described to perform the following tests:
  1. A relay in the de-energized position should have continuity between terminals 87A and 30, and no continuity between terminals 87 and 30. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, replace the faulty relay.
  2. Resistance between terminals 85 and 86 (electromagnet) should be 75 ±5 ohms . If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, replace the faulty relay.
  3. Connect a battery B+ lead to terminals 86 and a ground lead to terminal 85 to energize the relay. The relay should click. Also test for continuity between terminals 30 and 87, and no continuity between terminals 87A and 30. If OK, refer to Relay Circuit Test procedure. If not OK, replace the faulty relay.
RELAY CIRCUIT TEST
  1. The relay common feed terminal cavity (30) is connected to battery voltage and should be hot at all times. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, repair the open circuit to the PDC fuse as required.
  2. The relay normally closed terminal (87A) is connected to terminal 30 in the de-energized position, but is not used for this application. Go to Step 3.
  3. The relay normally open terminal (87) is connected to the common feed terminal (30) in the energized position. This terminal supplies battery voltage to the starter solenoid field coils. There should be continuity between the cavity for relay terminal 87 and the starter solenoid terminal at all times. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair the open circuit to the starter solenoid as required.
  4. The coil battery terminal (86) is connected to the electromagnet in the relay. It is energized when the ignition switch is held in the Start position and the clutch pedal is depressed (manual trans). Check for battery voltage at the cavity for relay terminal 86 with the ignition switch in the Start position and the clutch pedal is depressed (manual trans), and no voltage when the ignition switch is released to the ON position. If OK, go to Step 5. If not OK, check for an open or short circuit to the ignition switch and repair, if required. If the circuit to the ignition switch is OK, see the Ignition Switch Test procedure.
  5. The coil ground terminal (85) is connected to the electromagnet in the relay. It is grounded through the transmission range sensor only when the gearshift selector lever is in the Park or Neutral positions. Check for continuity to ground at the cavity for relay terminal 85. If not OK with an automatic transmission, check for an open or short circuit to the transmission range sensor and repair. It is grounded by the PCM if the conditions are right to start the car. For automatic trans. cars the PCM must see Park Neutral switch and near zero engine rpm. For manual trans. cars the PCM only needs to see near zero engine rpm. To diagnose the Park Neutral switch of the trans range sensor refer to the transaxle section for more information. Check for continuity to ground while the ignition switch is in the start position. If not OK and the vehicle has an automatic trans. verify Park Neutral switch operation. If that checks OK check for continuity between PCM and the terminal 85. Repair open circuit as required. If OK, the PCM may be defective

clean battery terminals, also clean and inspect cables. make sure all connections are tight and have a good solid ground one to the body and main to motor. check battery level and charge level at rest and while running to make sure your getting a charge .

Starter does not engage when key is turned to start


assuming battery fully charged hook test lite between good groud and small starter terminal have somebody to crank if lits chek power and ground to starter and replace starter if no lit go to starter relay terminal 30 and 87 use a piece off wire and momentarily bridge them if starter bumps the engine check terminals 85 86 one is power when cranking the other is ground if starter bumps and test lit hooked to 85 86 lits replace relay if no lite keep tracing ckt to ignition switch

93 chevy caprice 5.0 new fuel pump changed relay and fuse still can't get pump to work can't even get relay to click checked power to relay and used jump wire to pump prime wire pump works w


If relay worked when placed in another vehicle you must have a wiring problem. trace wires from fuse block to relay checking for corrosion or short.

My heater/air conditioning fan stopped blowing. Checked fuses, they are fine. No power to fan.


cooling fan relay could be bad,check relay by making a fuse jumper wire.look at the relay control circuits on relay look for control circuits terminal number 85 and terminal 86 hook fuse jumper wire terminal 85 on relay to good ground and take terminal 86 on relay hook up a jumper wire touch battery positive terminal relay should click if not, relay bad.

Cooling fans won't run on high.


The diagram is a little hard to follow, but it looks like on the high fan relay there are 5 circuits like on the hi-low relay.
Pin 86 is power for the magnet, 85 is the ground signal from the module. The module grounds the magnet to move the contacts.
Pin 30 goes to the fan and pin 87 goes to a 50amp fuse.
Pin 87A is a jumper between the two relays.
The fan motor gets power from three different sources and is grounded to the car. The other two wires are return signals to the module. Kind of like a three way light switch in a house.
On the fan control relay, pins 30 and 85 are hot, pin 87 goes to the fan motor, and pin 86 is grounded by the module.

I have check engine error codes 11, 12 on my 95 grand cherokee limited the engine wont start just keeps turning over


Code 11 means no distributor reference signal detected during cranking. Check the circuit between the Distributor and PCM (computer). Also, keep in mind the following operations/tests apply to these relays only: Automatic Shutdown (ASD) , Fuel Pump and Ballast Bypass. For operations/tests on all other relays refer to the appropriate test.

OPERATION:
The relay terminal numbers can be found on the bottom of the relay.
Terminal number 30 is connected to battery voltage and can be switched or B + (hot) at all times.
Terminal number 87A is connected (a circuit is formed) to terminal 30 in the de-energized (normally OFF) position.
Terminal number 87 is connected (a circuit is formed) to terminal 30 in the energized (ON) position. Terminal number 87 then supplies battery voltage to the component being operated.
Terminal number 86 is connected to a switched power source.
Terminal number 85 is grounded by the Engine Controller.

TESTING:
Remove relay before testing.
Using an ohmmeter, perform a resistance test between terminals 85 and 86. Resistance value (ohms) should be 75 ±5 ohms for resistor equipped relays.
Connect the ohmmeter between terminals number 87A and 30. Continuity should be present at this time.
Connect the ohmmeter between terminals number 87 and 30. Continuity should not be present at this time.
Use a set of jumper wires (16 gauge or smaller). Connect one jumper wire between terminal number 85 (on the relay) to the ground side (-) of a 12 Volt power source.
Attach the other jumper wire to the positive side (+) of a 12V power source. Do not connect the jumper wire to relay at this time.

CAUTION: Do not allow the ohmmeter to contact terminals 85 or 86 during these tests. Damage to ohmmeter may result.

Attach the other jumper wire (12V +) to terminal number 86. This will activate the relay. Continuity should now be present between terminals number 87 and 30. Continuity should not be present between terminals number 87A and 30.
Disconnect jumper wires from relay and 12 Volt power source.

If continuity or resistance tests did not pass replace relay. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and connector are located in the engine compartment, mounted to the inner fender, next to the air cleaner housing (click image fo zoom).
DTC 11 - No reference signal during engine cranking. No camshaft reference signal was detected during engine cranking.
DTC 12 - Battery disconnect. Battery input to PCM disconnected during last 50 key starts.
DTC 42 - ASD relay control circuit. An open or shorted condition detected in the auto shut down relay circuit.

I have a 1987 chevrolet caprice and when i turn my headlights on my right turn signal light comes on and stays solid on the dash and it makes the dinging noise. my front parking break on that side dont...


Does it do it if you just turn the parking lights on? I would suspect this is a bad ground causing the head or tail lamps to pull through the turn circuit. I came across this years ago in an 85 cutlass. the ground for the tail lights was very rusty. Cleaning and regrounding solved the issue.

YOU CAN CHECK ABS BRAKE FUSES MAKE SURE IT IS IN TIGHT.AND CHECK FOR FAULTY ABS RELAYS.TO CHECK RELAY LOOK AT RELAY TERMINALS YOU HAVE TERMINAL 86 AND TERMINAL 85.YOU CONNECT TERMINAL 85 TO GROUND AND TERMINAL 86 TO BATTERY POSITIVE TERMINAL.IF RELAY CLICKS WHEN BATTERY VOLTAGE IS APPLIED.RELAY IS WORKING IF YOU HEAR NO CLICK RELAY NO GOOD NEEDS REPLACING.

I have a 2000 expedition with a relay clicking like crazy under the steering column and noticed with the key in the off position the heater blower still has power. It is killing the battery. please advise


With the relay connectected check the back it is either a 4 or 5 prong terminal 30 is battery volt 85 or 86 is ground if 85 is ground 86 will have battery volt 87 is power going to load such as blower motor the ground should be 0.05 or lower trace it back to problem or if 87 has low battery volt it could be the relay contacts inside
