Question about Dodge Pickup

Dodge Power Ram 250. Engine quit. Coasted to stop. Small fire, resulting burning through two small wires, exposing two other wires. the wires coming from a single larger wire. I twisted jumper wires across the two broken wires, taped the expose wires. Started the engine and drove it five miles to my home. Then soldered the splices. Retaped and bundled the wires. When I started the engine, it died imediately, smoking from the same wires. Are these fusible links? I don,t have a wiring diagram.

I would really like to find a wiring diagram of the ignition system and fusable links.

  • rrbrown Mar 13, 2009

I need more specific answers about fusible links. If these wires were fusible links the the problem is some where else and was not caused by abasion and grounding.

The wiring diagram says there is a fusible link in the middle of a brown with red stripe 4 gauge wire.
the power wire (which is brown with red stripe) goes from a 4 gauge wire down to a 8 gauge wire before it makes it to the post. The 8 gauge wire is light blue and says "fuse link".

If you go and pick up a Haynes manual at the local auto parts store, it should have the wiring diagram for the harness on your truck which should help you figure out what is happening. Sounds like you may be shorting something, possibly have a wiring grounding itself (look for a worn and/or broken wire). Might be a good idea to replace the harness. You can get a used one from www.car-parts.com.

Something is definitely causing your wires to burn. If it is a fusable link it definitely isn't blowing out the fuse - one reason cuold be you have a higher amp fuse inserted where a lower amp fuse should go. The public library has AllData available - there you can print out a wire diagram for you particular vehicle for free.

It's more likely the same for all models.

Thanks.

I do not believe these are fusible links, you should have seen some sign of that if they were. My suggestion would be to re-check the wires you soldered and bundled back together, there may be a possibility that wires may still be touching even though you thought they wer all separated from each other when you bundled them all back together. You may also be able to find a book at the local library or even see if the dealer can fax you a diagram if you find nothing else wrong. Hope this helps.

It sounds that the wires were wrongly connected.follow the wires and check out the related fuse and replace them.

Hi

This might have happened as the wiring could have shorted inside the splicing.Taping would not prevent the wires for a longer time.

remove the inspection cover under the torque converter and check for failed flexi-plate drive. The plate that the torque converter is connected to that is attached to the crank shaft. Check the torque converter control (TCC) clutch solenoid/servo for failure.

Dodge pick up 1981 doesn't fire

At the positive battery post, you have a cable with a large and small wire. The large wire goes to the starter relay, the small goes to the fuse box and the key switch. The small wire has a fuseable link between the battery and fuse box.
Do you have power on that wire as it goes into the fuse box ? And are the fuses hot with the key on ?

04 dodge ram pickup has code po 456 what is this code? 04 dodge ram 1500 5.7 engine gas mileage has gotten worse.

Small leak in evaporative emissions system. Basically takes fuel vapors and recirculates them back to engine to be burned rather than vented into the atmosphere. One common cause of light on dash is faulty/dirty gas cap seal. Did you add fuel just before light came on? Otherwise a small leak at a hose etc., in system, as well as faulty purge system may also cause it.

there is two solutions possible:

1. the wire you put in is way to small so it will overheat

2. you have a bad connection or ground somewhere that allows overheating...

either way it's gonna catch fire sooner or later...

Removing speedometer 1992 dodge ram 250

I don't know if it's the same as my D150. But it's pretty simple:
1) remove about six screws from under the upper lip of the dash face bessal and one under the overhand above the radio.
2) carefully jimmy the bessal straight out. It has about four spring trim-clips that will release under pressure.
3) this exposes the speedometer instrument cluster. It is one big assembly (speedometer, fuel, temp and elctrical guages, etc) attahed with about six #2 phillips face screws. Remove these.
4) There are three back contections on the cluster: two electronic and one mechanical. Carefully start to pull the cluster out along the steering column until you see the shift indicator control line ( a small fishing-line with a hook on the end) attached to a small steel flang on the base of the steering column. This can be unhooked with your fingers or needle-nose pliers.
5) as you pull the cluster further out you can reach behind and unplug the two electronic connections. The round one simply pulls straight out. The last (rectangular) one has a pinch latch you need to compress to allow the plug to come out.
your finished!
