Sounds like you haven't indexed the rotor correctly or the cap isn't seated correctly.  Did you replace the plug wires correctly?  Dis you bump the position of the distributor?

Cranks fine but wont start. i can smell fuel. seems like its not firing.

I would check for a spark first, but you can pull of the distributor cap and check if the rotor is still turning. If it is not turning, you may have a broken timing chain. If it is turning and there is no spark, it is probably bad spark plug wires, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, camshaft position sensor, or crankshaft position sensor.

96 jimmy replaced the dist. cap now wont start no spark at the coil???

Double check to make sure your rotor is cliped into the right place. It should have a slot it slides into. Also check to make sure the cap was not put on crooked and bend a tab or broke the rotor or broke the steel tab off the rotor. Also check to make sure that you did not accidently unhook any wires to the distributor.

If it rains or is wet out engine turns over but wont fire like its gettin no sparke but if its dry out it fires right up with no problems

Check the cap and rotor. When it's dry out start it at night in a dark spot. If there's a crack in the cap you should see a spark jump. Or the seal on the base is bad. That's a problem I've run into repeatedly with the 4.3 vortec motors. Moisture conducts electricity so the spark is dissipated inside the cap and doesn't know where to go.

I have a 1997 gmc jimmy and it is hard to start when it is cold i think its a choke problem.

Hello,
The choke on your vehicle is a computer controled fuel system. It is usually a fuel pump but sometimes a Distributor cap and rotor problem. I would first check the distributor cap and rotor. Look for white corrosion in the cap and in the bottom of the distributor. If you see the corrosion in the bottom of the distributor clean it out with brake cleaner. The Coil wire some times fails causing a hard start situation. I suggest checking these things before doing any thing with the fuel pump. I would also replace the fuel filter and spark plugs if you do end up replacing the cap and rotor.

I hope this helps.

Weak spark wont start

Ok, first check the hot wire coming into the distributor to make sure you have a full 12 to 13 volts. If you do then I recomend that you replace the rotor and distributor cap first. Let me know.
Good luck. Dont forget to rate.

97 jimmy wont start

Check for a bad distributor cap and or rotor..........a bad cap and or rotor can caues firing (cross fire)across the terminals and introduce spark to the wrong cylinders at the wrong time.......
hope this helps.....good luck!
