Sounds like you will need to extract both parts of the broken shaft and replace with a new one.

SOURCE: replace front wheel bearings

The bearings in your car are pressed into a hub. If the part is available as an assembly, it can be replaced that way. Generally on a front drive car:
Remove wheels and brake calipers
If it is pressed in: remove the rotors, disconnect the drive shafts and remove the steering knuckle. Then the old bearing is pressed out and the new one pressed in with a machine shop press. If the bearing is part of the hub, that will be unbolted and the new one swapped.

On a scale of 1-10 difficulty, Id rate it a strong 7

what I do is put a glob of grease in the palm of my hand and push bearing down in to grease untill you see the grease come out of the bearing or you can go to your local parts store and get a bearing grease packer. also wipe spindal with a genorus glob and put grease in between bearing in rotor. To get to the bearings all you need to do is remove tire, center cap (outter grease seal) the silver cap in the center. the cotter pin, Nut, washer outter bearing then the rotor will slip off inner bearing is in rotor still being held in by inner grease seal take seal off replace with new one pack your bearings and reverse removal procedure when retightening nut do not make tight just snug the go another turn if you go to tight you will burn your bearings real fast.

No way ,its a strip the the whole hub unit off and there is a circlip coming in from the back ,which is the way the bearing is pushed out ,NO HAMMERS

You need to check the fluid level to make sure its full,
Then if you could get access to a hoist so you can pin point your noise.

SOURCE: whining/grinding noise at deceleration

If the noise is on decceleration mostly like it is the pinion bearing in the diffrential. Could possibly be spider gears as well.

If the shaft is powering out to rear end then internal on rear possibly broken differential. If no power from case to rear then broken in case.

Loud popping noise coming front passenger side of


Most likely cause of loud popping noise would be a broken or breaking cv shaft. The cv drive shafts have a rubber boot around the bearings on the shaft. Look for a broken rubber boot on the shaft that runs from the transmission housing to the wheel hub area of front wheel. If you find a broken or cracked boot then most likley the **** needs to be replaced to solve your problem.

How technical is it to replace a front wheel bearing on a 2005 Pontiac SV6 and can I do it without any specialized tools


you will need a big socket (20 or 21 mm) and 1/2 inch drive to remove axle nut and torque wrench to reinstall. The book DOES call for a special tool to get the hub off the axle, but I have never used one before.


Removal & Installation


  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  4. Remove the brake caliper and wire aside.
  5. Remove the brake rotor.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the wheel speed sensor.
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor connector from the bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
  8. Remove the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts.
  9. Install Wheel Hub Removal tool J-42129 to the hub and bearing assembly in order to remove the hub and bearing assembly from the wheel drive shaft.
  10. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.

To install:
  1. Install the hub and bearing assembly to the steering knuckle.
  2. Install the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  3. Install the wheel speed sensor connector into the bracket until the locking tabs click into place.
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the axle nut to the wheel drive shaft and hand tighten.
  6. Install the brake rotor.
  7. Use a screw driver or similar tool to stop the rotation of the brake rotor.
  8. Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
  9. Install the brake caliper.
  10. Install the tire and wheel.

I would like to know if the wheel bearing is in the shaft or the hub?


The Constant Velocity (CV) joints are located on the inner and outer edges of the axle shaft. The axle shaft runs through the hub and bearing in the spindle.

Front drive shaft not fully engaged in 4WD, with truck on stands all 4 wheels do rotate but if i stop front wheels the front drive shaft is not engaged


Hi,
Do you have auto locking hubs on the front wheels, or manual locking hubs?
If you have auto locking hubs chances are they are not engaging properly and will need to be removed and spline sets checked for broken teeth on locking hub and locking shaft.
If you have manual locking hubs then check that they are firm when turning to engage them in the lock position.If they are light when engaging them to the lock position then they my have broken/worn out the locking hub and spline. Also check that the engaging spring inside the hub has enough tension to engage the hubs they may be broken. If the hub are all ok then you have a problem in the transfer box, where the 4WD lever is not meshing the transfer box properly. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

front wheel bearing comes as complete hub assembly remove brake calliper and brake disc remove drive shaft nut at the back of hub housing there are some bolts wire brush this area well use penetrating oil remove the bolts tap hub out of housing can be tight so take your time clean housing well then fit new hub secure bolts fit and tourqe up hub drive shaft nut fit disc and calliper

use a cutting wheel and cut through the bearing as far as you can without damaging the drive shaft.Then get a big hammer and a chisel drive the chisel into the cut and break the bearing.

How do you take drive shaft out on a ford corsair?


Ford corsair built in the 60s is a rear wheel drive car??.Any front wheel drive vehicle must have the big nut undone in the centre of the wheel ,put some engine oil on it let it soak for a day then undo it with a 32mm socket and a 3/4 drive socket set or 1inch drive socket set .1/2 inch is unlikely to do it as the knuckle bar will snap .most front wheel drive cars you will need to drop the subframe as well so give everything a good soaking with an oil can ,NOT WD 40 you do not need to remove the disk only the drive shaft ,undo the lower track control arm ,the track rod end and with big nut undone,screw it back on till end is flush with shaft thread the wack shaft in to loosen it using a nice bit of hardwood so you dont damage the thread on the end .

  1. Remove the tire and wheel center cap.
  2. Remove the drive axle nut.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel. .
  4. Remove the brake rotor.
  5. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing. Place a brass drift against the outer end of the wheel drive shaft in order to protect the wheel drive shaft threads. Sharply strike the brass drift with the hammer. Do not attempt to remove the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing at this time.
  6. Remove the wheel hub and bearing from the steering knuckle by removing the three bolts coming in from the back side of the knuckle.
Of course you may have to use a hammer to loosen the bearing from the knuckle.
