Do a compression test of the engine. See if your valves are seating properly is what you'd be looking for in checking for low compression. It could be causing the miss. When you changed plugs, did any one plug stand out as being different in color or texture at its base? The constant miss might put black sooty deposits on the spark plug. Course you'd have to remember which cylinder that plug came from to help you locate the miss. I'm assuming you have throttle body injection?

It's a possibility the injector is the problem. It may not have the psi it needs, therefore the cylinder could be misfiring, or the injector could be letting too much fuel in. Before I change the injector, I would try to have someone to clean the injection system to see how it works. The cleaning around in South Carolina is $99-$149 depending on where you go.

2002 mercury sable. misfiring. taken it to get looked at. cant find why its misfiring. check engine light is on.

first take it to have the codes extracted then post them and I may have an idea as to what may be wrong with it. I know autozone will extract the code for free some other shops may as well.

Engine light on

They are still looking for a cause because it isnt misfiring right now or because they cant find the cause of the stored misfire codes ?
If it is misfiring right now and they cant figure it out then perhaps you should find new mechanics !
I have seen a lot of bad coils on the PT.
Misfire is usually caused by spark plug wires first, spark plugs 2nd, and coil third.
If it isnt misfiring now, spray down the wires with water. If it misfires after that replace the spark plug wires and spark plugs and try again.
If it still misfires then the problem will likely be the coil.

Misfire on cyclinder

I would check the fuel injector on number 2 cylinder. If the injecter is dirty or not functioning properly it may give you the symptom of an ignition misfire.

Misfire

Do a compression test to see if the PSI hold steady. If fluxuating the valves can be bad or a host of other things internally
