What causes a 2000 Lincoln Continental to accelerate on its own?

Sometimes the car, when stopping at a stop sign, does not want to idle down, it wants top rev up.

Make sure you have brake lights. This is were the shifter solenoid gets it's signal from to get it out of gear.
One thing you can try is turn the igntion switch towards the run postion stopping just short of activating the electronics. Then try and move shifter to neutral then you can start it and out it into gear so you can drive it to get it fixed.

SOURCE: vehicle shuts off sometimes when stopping

Set your idle speed to mfg recomindation if that doesnt help check the dash pot that is what keeps the engine from stalling at sudden speed reduction

What is the safest Removal and cleaning of egr valve on a 1999 lincoln continental?

Doubtful. The EGR valve only opens when you are going 40+ m.p.h. and not accelerating. The EGR valve is normally CLOSED at idle and, when it does not seat correctly, it usually just causes the vehicle to idle rough. If it becomes stuck open, it will invariably cause your CHECK ENGINE light to come on (there is a position sensor).
You can use regular penetrating oil (WD-40) to clean and lubricate the EGR valve and see if that helps, but a more likely suspect is your THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR or your IDLE AIR CONTROLLER.

Check engine light comes on during acceleration and cruising but turns off when stopped at idle..i replaced egr valve but problem persists

Please get the codes (check engine light) checked by a mechanic or auto parts store that can scan it for you. It's not good to drive w/the CEL on...as it could cause more damage.

Vibration

It sounds like it could be an engine misfire. As the engine spins faster and faster that misfire makes itself less apparent. However on stops and low idle speeds it will be very obvious. If the check engine light is on that would also help you narrow down the issue.

Idle speed too low

Sounds like you may have an issue with your idle air control or your mass air flow sensor. The IAC can cause a vehicle to stall when up to temperature, especially when warmer outside.I would clean or replace that for starters.

98 lincoln cont. idle speeds up in park...sometimes keeps climbing to around 2500 rpm...sometimes idle is normal though. If in drive and idle is climbing, can drive without using the accelerator!

I had the same problem. I changed the throttle position sensor (TPS). I haven't had any trouble since I replaced mine about three months ago.
