If you can pull the rotating knob off, use a pair of pliers and rotate the rod and see if it works....or, does the knob seem like it is not grabbing?

Why doesn't my 2001 Ford Taurus have heat but the blower motor works but only blows cold air.


Is the coolant level full ? Are the heater hoses hot to the touch ? Do you know where the heater hoses are ? Out in the engine compartment going through the fire wall into the passenger compartment . 2 hoses , one carries hot coolant into the heater core the other is a return back to the cooling system . If hoses are hot you have a temp. door not working . When warmed up what does temp gauge show ?
Temperature Control
The temperature control operates in the following manner:
  • Temperature control of the manual A/C-heater system is determined by the position of the temperature control knob (between COOL and WARM).
  • This control knob is connected to a potentiometer mounted in the integrated control panel. This potentiometer is electrically connected to the A/C electronic blend door actuator that operates the A/C air temperature control door.
  • The A/C electronic blend door actuator contains a reversible electric motor, another potentiometer and a printed circuit board. The wiper of the potentiometer is connected to the actuator output shaft and moves with the output shaft to indicate the position of the A/C air temperature control door.
  • Battery voltage is applied to the ends of each potentiometer. The voltage available at each wiper indicates the position of the potentiometer. The printed circuit board drives the actuator in whichever direction is necessary to make the actuator wiper voltage agree with the control wiper voltage.
System uses a reheat method to provide conditioned air to passenger compartment.
  • All airflow from the blower motor (18527) passes through the A/C evaporator housing where it can be cooled and dehumidified.
  • Temperature is then regulated by reheating a portion of the cooled dry air and blending it with the remaining cool air to the desired temperature.
  • Temperature blending is varied by the A/C air temperature control door which regulates the amount of cooled air that flows through and around the heater core (18476), where it is mixed and distributed.

My 1998 gmc jimmy slt has a heating problem. The heater wont turn off. As long as the car is on the heater is on full blast. The fans work and everything knob wise works but the heater is always on.


The air temperature valve electronic actuator positions the temperature door according to the temperature setting of the temperature control on the temperature control knob. For the full COLD temperature setting, the temperature control returns approximately 12 volts to the air temperature valve electric actuator. When the temperature setting is changed to full HOT, the temperature door is moved to the warm position and the output drops to about 0 volts. For a temperature setting in the mid range, the temperature door is positioned according to the voltage supplied through the temperature control switch.

Inspect the HVAC I fuse 21.

  1. Disconnect the air temperature valve sensor.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Move the headlamp switch to the PARK position.
  4. Using the J 35616-A , connect a J 39200 Digital Multimeter (DMM) between cavity 8 (CKT 733) of the air temperature valve motor connector and ground.
  5. Move the temperature control knob from the HOT position to the COLD position.
Does the voltage vary smoothly and continuously within the specified range?
0-12 V
Go to Step 4

Using the J 35616-A , connect a J 39200 DMM between cavity 10 (CKT 341) of the air temperature valve motor connector and ground.
Does the voltage equal the specified value?

Where is the air and heat blend motor on a 2000 dodge dakota?


Hi Sharon, I'm glad to help. Your 2000 year doesn't have a motor for the temp door. It operated by a cable running from the control head to the temp door and you work it manually. If you can't control the temperature from hot to cold, sometimes the cable come off or breaks. Here how you can see the cable to see if its working. Remove the radio and right behind it you will see the cable attached to the door, while watching it move the temp lever from hot to cold and watch it. If it is moving then its most likely out of ajustment. If it is not moving, then you'll need a new cable. Just in case it is moving, I'm attaching the instruction on how to adjust it below. TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE

Any time the heater-A/C control or the temperature control cable are removed and/or replaced, the following procedure must be performed.
  1. The temperature control cable housing and core must be installed at both the heater-A/C control and the heater-A/C housing ends, and the heater-A/C control must be installed in the instrument panel. See Heater-A/C Control and Temperature Control Cable in the Removal and Installation section of this group for the procedures.
  2. Rotate the temperature control knob on the heater-A/C control so that the knob pointer is in the 12 o'clock position.
  3. Pull the temperature control knob straight out from the heater-A/C control base until the perimeter of the knob (not the knob pointer) protrudes about 6 millimeters (0.25 inch) from the face of the control base.
  4. Rotate the temperature control knob to the 1 o'clock position. Push in on the knob slightly and continue rotating the knob to its full clockwise stop. The knob pointer should be aimed at a position about 8 millimeters (0.315 inch) beyond the end of the graduated red strobe temperature control graphic on the face of the heater-A/C control base. If the knob is not pointed to the correct position, go back to Step 2 and repeat the adjustment procedure.
  5. Rotate the temperature control knob counterclockwise until the knob pointer is in the 12 o'clock position again.
  6. Push the temperature control knob straight in towards the heater-A/C control base until the perimeter of the knob (not the knob pointer) is flush with the face of the heater-A/C control base.
  7. Rotate the knob to its full clockwise stop again. The knob pointer should be aimed at the end of the graduated red strobe temperature control graphic on the face of the heater-A/C control base. If OK, go to Step 8. If not OK, go back to Step 2.
  8. Rotate the knob to its full counterclockwise stop and release the knob. If the knob springs back from the counterclockwise stop, the self-adjuster clip that secures the temperature control cable to the blend-air door lever is improperly installed. See Temperature Control Cable in the Removal and Installation section of this group for the procedures. If the knob does not spring back, the temperature control cable adjustment is complete.

Heater does not blow hot or even warm air


This is not a heater valve problem, for one thing there isn't any such part in the model. The problem is a defective air temperature control blend door inside the air ducting.

Hello, What you need to do is let the truck warm up and then feel the heater hoses. If the heater hoses are hot, the problem is under the dash in the ductwork doors or the heater knob is cracked.

If you have a nonDigital heater control with just a knob, they are prone to break. They run about $9 at a Dealer and many Salvage yards won't let go of them without selling the whole heater control. Since the shaft of the heater is plastic, you can gently grab the heater knob shaft after you remove the knob and turn it with a pair of pliers.

Your heat should work. If the heater does not work and you have water flow in the heater hoses under the hood; the remaining problem is with a ductwork door. Either the actuator (sometimes callled a motor,solenoid,dashpot,) is broken or a plenum door has jumped its mount and is stuck.

If you do not have hot hoses at the heater you need to check your heater water control valve. Some models use them, some models just rely on the ductwork to reroute the heat in the Summer. This valve would be where one of the heater hoses goes to under the hood by the Firewall. It may be controlled by Vacuum or Electric or a cable.

That pretty much covers it. I hope my solution is very helpful to you. I had to replace the knob on my 99 F150 and learned how common this defect is and what the Salvage yards are doing.

that year / series of GM sonoma and s-10 where famous for having clogged heater cores - is temp of hoses going in and out the same ? if not try to flush out ther core, if they are, ck to see if the hot water valve is woking, and finally operation of the doors inside the heater box itself

My a/c won't blow cold and heater doesnt get hot


Is the heater working? Turn the A.C. off with the car at an idle. Turn the A.C. on and listen for the compressor to turn on. (should hear a click under the hood and the motor should change pitch. If no noise, the compressor is not comming on. The o-rings were bad about leaking on these cars, letting out all the freeon. If there is no freeon, the low pressure switch won't let the compressor run.

I have the same problem with my windstar blower is fine but is coming cold air but no heat i dont know what to do can any one show me how to fix it thnx


First, feel the heater hoses going into the firewall under the hood. If they are hot, then you have hot engine coolant going into the heater core. If they are not hot, then you either have a bad thermostat or you are very low on engine coolant.

Next you need air flowing through the heater core so it can come out heated through your vents. If the iar is flowing somewhere else, your temp blend door is not moving because the bend door motor is bad or your temp knob on your heater controls is bad. The blend door motor is an electric motor.

Air Flow Control
Air flow control is accomplished in the following manner:
  • Primary control is through the function selector knob , mounted on the heater function selector switch, which is part of the heater control .
  • The function selector knob has the following positions: OFF, PANEL, PANEL/FLOOR, FLOOR, FLOOR/DEFROST and DEFROST.
  • The heater function selector switch combines a vacuum selector valve with an internal electrical switch.
  • The vacuum selector valve directs source vacuum to various vacuum control motors (18A318) . Refer to the System Airflow Schematic and Vacuum Control Charts.
  • An internal single-pole electrical switch is also controlled by the selector. The switch controls the electrical supply to the heater blower motor switch (18578) .
  • The position of the function selector knob determines the manner in which the system will operate.
  • Each position of the function selector knob is detented for positive engagement.
Temperature Control
The temperature control operates in the following manner:
  • Temperature control of the heater system is determined by the position of the temperature control knob (between COOL-BLUE and WARM-RED) of the heater control .
